“Not worth the trek”
Reviewed March 6, 2014

Birches is quite remote - 5k down a dirt track from Underberg. The room is fine - but breakfast is only served at the Lemon Tree Cafe in Underberg - and it is frustrating that it doesn't open until 8.30am. All restaurants and shops etc are also in Underberg, so you are likely to be up and down the dirt track quite a lot. We weren't that impressed with the Lemon Tree for dinner either - most of the food is microwaved.
However, the location of Birches is very peaceful - which is fine for a night but for us there was not enough to do in the area round the cottage - not even any walking trails - so, in future, we will stay nearer the National Parks further north.

we spent valentine weekend in the Birches Cottage on Brittlewood Estate owned by the friendliest most welcoming couple around - Huck and Elsabe Orban. the Room and Estate are unbelievably comfortable (king size bed with down duvets provides extreme comfort) and beautiful! we took a stroll down the path to the river past the patience pool stopping at each one of the view point decks along the way soaking in the breath taking scenery and witnessing a truly amazing sunset. the Umzimkulu River set at the bottom of the valley provides for some great fly fishing, bird spotting and we were even lucky enough to see otters frolicking in the river. with a maximum of 4 guest (very possible to put children in too) we had all the privacy we needed and certainly no noise or crowding!! this is truly an amazing place that is highly recommended by us. we will definitely be back!!

We eventually found Willows down a 5 Km ish muddy, cow-poo ridden lane( just after milking). There was no one to meet and greet us on arrival, eventually we found an empty room with a note left on the bed for us .
In this note were instructions about the breakfast arrangements - if you were happy with a continental one then it could be done in-situ, if not, and a more substantial one was wanted (and who doesn't when on holiday?) we were to get in the car and go down the lane again and visit the proprietor's restaurant/bistro,'The Lemon Tree,' where his staff would deal with us for breakfast.
We got the impression the owner was not too bothered with his guests - if there was anything that we wanted for the room we were to contact the room maid (who we never saw).

Room Tip: The room was very well equipped and furnished

Birches Cottage is situated 4 km out of the town of Underberg. The cottage is very well appointed, spacious with a lounge, kitchenette area, big bedroom and large bathroom. The furniture is very comfortable and the fittings and fixtures are all of good quality. The property is beautiful, with well laid out walks down to the river and views over the valley. Decks and benches have been positioned along the walks for rest stops and to admire the view.

Breakfast is served at a restaurant in town that is owned by the hosts and the food was very, very good. Fresh, delicious and tasty.

This is truly a wonderful place to stay - close to town yet away from it all in a magnificent setting.

Highly recommended.
