“Great Hotel Experience”
Reviewed August 23, 2010

The Oyster Box is a great place to stay. The location is superb, the architecture is fantastic and the ambiance and vibe are great. It is a hotel where you can go and just chill out. There are ample bars, restaurants, facilities and things to do. The pools are great and the place is just cool.

The rooms, although small, are very nice and we had a family suite (room 301) with a spectacular view of the ocean and lighthouse.

The food was excellent in the Grill Room restaurant and the breakfasts and lunches were great. No complaints about the food department at all (and we are very fussy eaters).

There were a few things that could have been better, they are:

1. The decor in some of the public areas is a bit over-the-top and kitsch (as mentioned by other reviewers). They could simplify the decor and have a much cleaner look.
2. The art on the walls is horrific. Apart from a few nice pieces, there is too much sub-standard artwork on the walls. They could do better in this department.
3. Our room was very dirty when we first arrived in it. The bedspread was filthy and we had to have it replaced immediately.
4. The lighting and switch configuration needs a lot of practice to master and every time my wife went to the bathroom and switched on the lights it turned on a light above the bed which drove me crazy. They could simplify things and be better off.

Apart from these niggles above, The Oyster Box is just great and we would definitely like to go back and stay there in future.

The Oyster Box Hotel is my choice venue for the intermittant pulic training sessions I run in the Umhlanga area. (The last was on May 28 2010 and the next on August 18.) The additional 'extras' from a friendliness and service perspective are consistent from managment level down to all levels of staff. Everyone more than 'goes the extra mile' and 'makes business a pleasure'. No wonder my clients keep coming back for more!

We have also stayed in a number of different rooms. The combination of visual appeal, funcionality, comfort and unique decor have made our stays memorable. Again, the service here and in the bars and restaurants is exceptional. We have been made to feel 'special' as though they care about us as customers. One thing that really impresses me, too is that I have found the staff to be well-informed regarding the hotel and surrounding areas. For example, I asked one of the house-keeping supervisors a question about meals in the Grill Room and she enthusiastically was able to give me the (correct) details.

I love the ambiance and highly recommend the Oyster Box Hotel as a venue for functions and as a place to stay and entertain.

Having travelled extensively all over the world and stayed in many 5* properties - we would like to add the Oyster Box Hotel to the TOP OF OUR LIST!

We have just had the opportunity to stay 3 nights at the hotel - WHAT AN AWESOME EXPERIENCE - TRULY 5*!!!!!!! This accreditation is to the staff, who are ALL true ambassadors for the hotel! We had EXCELLENT service from the Deputy General Manager Tyler, as well as Chantal and Benjamin in Front Office, Deon in F & B and Princess in housekeeping! WOW!

CONGRATULATIONS! Not only on an awesome property, but on being truly 5*!!! THANK YOU!! We will return!

the bedrooms and the swimming pool is the best bit of this hotel. teh bedrooms are comfortable and very attractively and appropriately decorated in marine blue and white.however, the decoration of the main body of the hotel is really clashing and vulgar. the the bar area is as phoney as you could get with its monstrous glass floor looking down to a dining room table?? whats that all about? and the tea lobby and the breakfast rooms should be avoided at all costs after a heavy night because the frenzy of trellis, patterned materials and colours accelerate the headache! . far from being relaxed understated boutique hotel by the sea its over contrived city style hotel. who ever did the decor should be shot . such a unique sea side location perched on the cliffs should be allowed to speak for itsself.
the staff are all delightful although over trained to a point where they become a bit in your face. and the maids look hysterical in their odd outfits with pearls on the top.

with some ease on the decor (including those mafia-italian urns removed from the bottom of the elegant staircase i can see that this could become a lovely hotel . it is a unique location and should be treated as one. i would recommend this to a friend as an overnight stay but not for a week destination because its tortured decor does not create a relaxing atmosphere.
the owners should be told that less is more!!!

My Wife and i were fortunate to stay in the Oyster Box hotel for 3 nights recently and can honestly say that there was very little that could be changed in this hotel to make your experience any better.
From the moment we arrived and were greeted by smile and welcomes along with cold towels and a variety of welcome drinks on offer, we were then given a tour of the hotel by the reception clerk whilst our bags were making thier way to our room.
The room was excellent, not the biggest i've stayed in but first class for views of the sea and lighthouse and also its fixtures and fittings.
The food and drink at the hotel could not be faulted, we ate both in the 'Grill Room' which is one of the best meals and service we've had on this trip and also in the Ocean terrace which offers a wide selection of seafood and an excellent 'curry' buffet. Pricing for food and drink in the hotel is very reasonable when compared with other 4-5 star establishments both in SA and others.
The facilities in the hotel again could not be bettered, the pools were excellent with the added little touches such as free ice creams, cold towels, water etc all provided. The hotel also has its own small cinema which you can use to view dvd's, authentic, with sweets and popcorn thrown in, how lovely.

Somewhere i would certainly reccomend and will be vising again.

My husband and I stayed here for 5 days after travelling around South Africa for a few weeks and we were absolutely delighted. From the first moment we arrived at the hotel we had an incredible experience. We had a sea facing room that wasn't huge but decorated beautifully and had an amazing balcony with gorgeous view.

We were there over Easter and the hotel was really in the spirit of things with Easter Eggs and Hot Cross buns. Overall we found the food to be first class - especially the buffet breakfasts which are something we are still talking about. The curry buffet (lunch on dinner) was also really nice.

We thought it was the little extras that made The Oyster Box really special. One night we felt like staying in and watching a DVD. We got a DVD from reception and they brought us up pop corn to eat during the movie. They also brought around ice creams while we were sitting by the beautiful pool.

The hotel has been refurbished and is absolutely gorgeous - we would highly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a really special experience.
