“Great get away”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2012

My family has just returned from our stay today and although we had rainy weather the whole week I was still impressed daily with the hotel..... The daily activies for the kids are worthwhile, entertaining, educational and lots of fun for the kids.... The staff, namely Welcome, Natasha, Vivian, Andile, the rest of the names I can't seem to get to right now but they are truly dedicated and offer. So much fun and entertainment for the kids..... My daughter can't stop talking about all activities since we got back... As for the song follow the leader hey play for the kids daily, I have now had. To download. It for her and she been jamming non stop and keep asking if we can live with Uncle Vivian and welcome forever n Durban.....
Yes there is also lots of other activities and entertainment for adults but I again have to compliment the kiddies staff.... The rest of the staff is also very friendly and very efficient....
I will definitely be returning to umlanga sands soon...
THANKS A MILLION

I can recommend the Umhlanga Sands for families. It is well managed with many activities for children and always something for the adults too. I have stayed here on business and will definately not recommend this when you are in Umhlanga on business. Wifi is only availible in the very noisy public areas and is not free. The rooms all have a small kitchenette, which comes in handy. There are no amenities in the bathroom apart from soap and you will only receive a tea/coffee pack on the first day.

I avoid, wherever possible, vacations in timeshare "resorts" - and the Umhlanga Sands has again reminded me why. On a positive note, the newishly renovated rooms are neat and tidy. Most of these are four-sleepers, but we stayed in a six-sleeper. Designed for families with a youthfull attitide to life, you'll have to listen to blaring and repetative music from the pool deck for hours eash day. And don't bother to shut your rooms sliding doors, it won't help.
What's more, the main pool is so embarrassingly small for any hotel, let alone one of this type, that at times, you can hardly see the water for all the children stacked together like soldiers trying to find their few inches of swimming space. The adult pool, 20 and over, is just as pathetic. Tiny, shallow and otherwise depressingly innadequate. But it is heated - to add some warmth to your misery.
The staff are vibey and friendly, but really, nothing can make up for this hotels innedequacies. No wirelesss or internet in rooms. Plastic grass on the pool deck. No loungers by the pool because they would take up too much space. Instead, you lie on plastic mattresses proped up by triangular boxes for a backrest. The in-house restaurants, Spur and Mastro, provide barely adequate food. But nice ice cream and Mozart's.
There is an ATM, laundry and convenience sweet shop as well as a lounge come saloon come sports bar come kids movie venue.
I could go on and on, yet despite this, families pour in by the truckload. It seems, the general consensus is, parents hate the place, but do it for their kids. A reason for which I too am entirely guilty. But we've also stayed in better hotels along the strip. The Breakers for instance, has far, far better outdoor facilities and fully equiped kitchens. As do The Cabanna's.
The Beverly Hills Hotel, now under new management, is also nice, if not more expensive. Even The Oyster Box hotel is worth a look.
So unless you can live on two hours sleep a night and don't mind the perpetual discoteque approach to holiday's, try something else.

Room Tip: Stay on the seventeenth floor if you can, but also room twenty eight on the first four floors. These...

It is nicely located. The resort offers lots of entertainment for the kids - pools, kids rooms, sweet shop, ice cream shop plus the added benefit of the 2 restaurants on site makes it easier. There is a beauty shop as well - good for all ladies out there. Room service was provided at a nominal fee of R5 - which regardless of the amount - this shouldnt apply. If you are staying st this resort & supporting these restaurants for breakfast/lunch & supper at times - this fee should be waived. Room service seemed to work faster than sitting at the actual restaurant. Eg Maestro Restaurant - the staff is fast in serving you, but the kitchen is really slow in sending out food. we went there both mornings for breakfast & it was the same experience - too slow getting food to the tables. So rather get there early and order - dont be starving as this will just frustrate you. There is a nice Ice cream shop - Mozart...this is my favourite of ice cream shops in Jhb as well. There is also a beach shop - if you forgot a swimming costume/slippers etc - this in my opinion is over priced. If you take a walk /drive out of the resort to the shops of umhlanga - 5min away - you can pick up a whole outfit for less than 1 costume at the shop.
The resort has 2 pools - 1 kids, 1 adults. This is actually nice especially if couples want the quiet relaxation area without the crazy noise around the kids pool. But overall rating is that this resort is a good place for families to take their kids for a fun holiday.

Room Tip: There are 2 room types. If you are 2 couples going for a weekend away - I would suggest the 2bedroom...

I stayed for 7 nights from the 1st - 8th September 2012 in a 6 sleeper unit, on the 2nd floor.

Upon check-in, we were made to feel to Royalty. The process was smooth and efficient.

The room was fantastic - actually excellent since the refurbishment. However, I had to call Maintenance twice since the lamp in the 2nd bedroom was not working (the switch was replaced which sorted the problem out); and the night blinds (not the wooden blinds) in the 2nd bedroom couldn't be raised or dropped, hence the room was in constant darkness. This was not resolved during my stay. Hopefully, it'll be attended to soon.

We has terrible weather during the stay, hence we stayed indoors on most days. However, this was not my biggest frustration. From Wed - Friday, there was drilling going on in the hotel. Wed and Thurs was okay since this was from 11h30 - 13h30. On Friday morning, this drilling began at 09h20! I honestly thought the refurbishment was complete, but it appears that it isn't!

Nightly entertainment in Coco's was really good, expecially during the cold (was meant to be Spring) evenings.

Overall, a wonderful break from the norm, except for the weather and drilling! Would definitely return in 12 months time!

Room Tip: Additional safe, open parking is available on the upper section, with an entrance about 200m before...

This is really one of my favourite places, and they holiday is always great. Beautiful views, clean rooms, great staff and service, fantastic activities for kids, right on the beach, but great pool area, and so on.

But experience this time was spoilt by the two resident restaurants - Spur and M&A. Food quality is inconsistent - sometimes good, sometimes awful, and staff at both are dismissive and surly. Managers are invisible, if not incompetent. I know that both chains have better managed restaurants, because I go to other branches often. I think it's because they have a captive market and no competition - the hotel's policy is to allow guests to only consume outside food in their rooms. The result is that to get a decent meal you have to leave the hotel and drive/walk elsewhere - disruptive when all you want to do is relax by the pool all day.

It's a real pity, because this is the only thing that spoils your stay at this great resort

Room Tip: Rooms on the first floor have a really large nice balcony that you can relax on. Occasionally view i...

Umhlanga Sands is a very nice resort in a very safe area. The romms were very good and the front desk staff were very helpful and accomodating, especially as we needed to upgrade. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The resort was well placed to explore KZN and is close to King Shaka airport.
The only downside of the resort was the lack of full kitchen facilities in the rooms, with their being no hob or oven.

Room Tip: Go high, for the views and less noise from the sea.
