“In desperate need of major overhaul!”
Reviewed February 17, 2010

We had an unexpected one night stay at the Blue Marlin recently and thank god it was only for one night. There was a letter in the room from the owners saying that they know the hotel needs major updating but as they are now in the UK and in need of investors to help with the finances, they would like guests to bear with them. Fair enough but it is plain to see that this isn't something that has happened overnight, the hotel must have been run down for many years. Our family room was incredibly basic - very much like the awful no frills Ibis hotels. There was no air con just a ceiling fan. The family room consisted of a large double (two twins pushed together) - which were very uncomfortable and a separate room with 2 twin beds. This room had no ceiling fan. The carpet was badly stained and dirty. The bathroom was grim and depressing. Cracked tiles and a poor shower with a shower curtain that wrapped itself around you when showering!
Our room was located on the side of the hotel which is just above the railway track - if you have to stay here, make sure you are not on this side (the ocean side), as the rusty old freight train operates all day, starting at 3am and makes the most incredible, blood curdling screeching noise you have ever heard.

Breakfast consists on 2 or 3 fruits, cereal and bread. You can get a cooked breakfast but we literally could not stand to be in the room (the land that time forgot) for more than 5 minutes.

The grounds are ok, there is a mish mash of old and broken plastic furniture.

The only good point is the staff, who were all friendly. The manager in particular was helpful to us. This hotel is used by Saga and so there is a high population of silver haired folk, some of whom seemed shocked to see a young teenager at their hotel, so I certainly would not recommend this hotel for young families, especially if you have standards!

I realise many British travellers have made use of the Blue Marlin Hotel for years but I honestly did not expect such incredibly basic rooms. The room that I stayed in had a sea view but wow talk about basic...No aircon just a ceiling fan and it was 34 degrees outside. The furniture is old and the blinds were so old that the lining behind the blinds was in tatters! This hotels idea of an "in room safe" was some basic metal box with place for a padlock ..wondered if they rented out padlocks for their "in room safes"? Bed side lights did not work .The bathroom was like something out of the 1970's (The hotel is actually 60 years old this year and doubt there has been any restyling in many years ) As for the shower you had to try find the water stream that was the strongest to try rinse the soap off your body. Breakfast was burnt brown toast , hard scrambled egg and 2 lousy rashers of bacon with more fat on than I have ever seen. Thank Goodness I only had to spend one night here!

Blue Marlin is now over 55 years old and has managed to retain the air of friendliness and high quality of true service that is no longer present in many hotels. The accommodation is perfectly adequate albeit basic. This is well reflected in the prices charged. I fully recommend the bed, breakfast and evening meal package. Food appeared to be home made with freshly baked ( yes, not bought in and cooked) cakes, bread and buns each morning. The average cost of a very good bottle of South African wine with dinner was around £6, a small mark up on supermarket prices.

The hotel caters well for families with young children and a superb sand and grass beach is just a few yards away with swimming pools and many other facilities. A Life Guard Club overlooks the beach and guards are on watch all day.

We played the Scottburgh, Umkomaas, Umdoni and Selborne golf courses. All at reasonable rates and with transport provided by the hotel at a small cost. Richard at the Blue Marlin will help arrange any golf for you.

I have stayed at the Blue Martin a number of times. It is an excellent hotel, well managed, helpful staff, clean rooms, good food and very good value for the money. The surrounding area is great with many tours, lots to do & see. Good golf courses nearby. We have always seen Whales & Dolphins from the Hotel grounds. They also operate a reliable pick-up service from the airport.
