“Not worth it”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2014 via mobile

We were looking forward to a great meal at the "award winning steakhouse" but it ended up very disappointing. The restaurant was empty (it was 13:00) but it still took more than 45min for our food. The steak was totally overdone, we asked for medium and it arrived so dry and white throughout. The chicken was ok for a pub, but not worth the price. The sole "a la" frair was greasy and bland. The veggies was tasteless and creamed spinach tasted like smoke. The worst of all is that it was expensive, not value for money at all.

We travelled to South Africa from Denmark and had dinner here whilst staying in margate. The food and service were great and the atmosphere were cosy and relaxing. We can recommend this restaurant.

“No Monk-ying around at Friar’s”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2013

Sherwood Forest too far for a good meal with RH and his merry men? Well, if you’re live along or are visiting the KZN South Coast, you may want to try out Friar Tuck award-winning steakhouse which has become a well-established, family-run eatery in the heart of Margate.

One enters the establishment up some stairs on the side of the building, through big wooden doors into a Sherwood Forest away from Sherwood Forest; Robin Hood and Friar Tuck-themed interior complete with forest tree and numerous medieval artefacts.

Our party of three opted for a table on the elevated, open balcony overlooking Marine Drive. We arrived there just after the lunch rush hour so the restaurant was empty. There will undoubtedly be more of an atmosphere at lunch or dinner time! The Robin Hood theme is extended to the menu with many well-priced, mouth-watering dishes, the speciality being their famous steaks. My aunt visiting us from The Netherlands opted for a “Maid Marion” size rump steak with huge onion rings, fries and garlic sauce while Wendy had a scrumptious oxtail dish, the meat melting gently with every bite. My chicken schnitzel was humungous, supplemented by fries, onion rings and a delicious creamy pepper sauce. We ended our meal with tasty Dom Pedros, all proficiently served by our friendly and professional waitron, Kaylan. Our bill, for three persons including glasses of wine and a couple of beers (sadly no real draught beers or ciders available!) came to just over R460.00 (about 35 Euros).

All in all, good quality food, reasonable prices and friendly, efficient service. It will even give the stingy Sheriff of Nottingham something to smile about!
