“a special place”
Reviewed September 6, 2008

We spent 3 nights in Falaza. We really liked our "room" which was concrete floor and real bathroom, but tented-bedroom. Very comfortable large beds. We found it very cute that the rhino could be seen from the restaurant, deers passed our room/tent, monkeys playing on the roof. Everything in the room was of high quality. Food in the retaurant was alright, nothing special. Staff was very attentive and friendly. Gamedrives good, we saw a lot of rhino and giraf but no elephants or lions.

We spent 4 days here as part of a South African multi place stay.
Permanent tent structures on a solid slab with large comfortable beds and reasonably good shower room.
Our tent was fine but maybe needed a bit of updating as the slab floor had cracked in a few places, hot water tap on sink was faulty and difficult at times and the shower was looking tired and old.
Apart from that, accommodation is great.
Very lovely and serene setting with full grown rhinos wandering on the "lawn" at short distances from you enough to make you surprised, overjoyed , excited and somewhat wary on occasion - all the emotions rolled into one.
Inyala feed around the tents, monkeys scuttle through the trees and tent tops and you are certainly "in the bush".
A waterhole nearby brings the animals down in the evening but you can't realy see this from the accommodation areas.
The safari guide took us on a daylight romp on foot through the bush - about 2 hrs extent and that was enjoyable. My daughters were fascinated by the dung beetles. Watch the ticks! They are there on many bush tips/branches and you could easily collect one or two. They can cause problems.

Staff are all very friendly and helpful. Game drives are ok but we didn't see that much (over indulged on a real live trip around Tanzania in past years so fenced in animals on game reserves somehow don't have the same wow factor with us I suppose!).
As we had a hire car we were able to drive into the huge nearby National Park on our own (about 45mins drive from the accommodation) and that proved to be excellent as we went at our own pace and could go down roads and tracks of our choosing. We spent about 5/6 hours in the National Park and forded rivers (saw the crocs), elephant, giraffe (loads of rhinos which this park is famous for) and loads of other animals (but saw no big cats). Hluhluwe and Falaza National Park then is a must see. Beautiful and stunning scenery, but glad we didn't just join the tourist trucks for a 2 hour drive around.

Food was ok in the restaurant and just right.

Found out that occasionally this place takes in big game hunters and so for mega bucks (usually from some Texan) a beautiful rhino will find it has to take several large bullets and give up some bodily parts as trophies for a guy to track it as sport for many kilometres and pump several bullets into it before finally dying. Don't want to get into the arguments and politics of all this here but maybe travellers should be aware of the reality within a lot of these sort of game parks. It may well mean for example that you feel you can't stay here due to conscience given one policy or another. At least you know.
The place obviously plays all this down and unless you ask and make uncomfrtable enquiries you may be blissfully unaware of the "darker side" of life.
Enjoy the place for what it is - accommodation amongst the wild animals and experiences/scents-smells with comfortable living to boot.

  • Liked — Placed within the site amongst the wild animals - in the bush!
  • Disliked — Looking a little tired and needs a bit of renovation

Falaza Game Reserve is a very special place. The rooms are great with large beds and nice bathroom. The floor is stone and the bathroom as well, and the walls and roofs are Tent. Animals are all around in the garden. Gamedrives very nice. Food was oké, it is buffet. Waltraud and Oliver, Germany

After our stay at Leopard Mountain Game Lodge, I didn't expect any other 4-star lodge to be any better.
Was I surprised when we arrived at Falaza!! Trained and very friendly staff, beautiful luxury tents with hugh beds, high standard of service.
Two rhinos were about 100 meters from our room, a nyala came by, and monkeys were playing near by our tent. Tent sound like tent, but it is not really a tent with its beautiful and luxury bathroom and proper door and windows.
The game drive was very good, and we saw loads of animals.
The staff in the restaurant are very friendly and make jokes.
Food is okay, but one does not go to a place like this for the food.

Falaza was the second reserve we stayed on during our holiday and it was great fun to sleep in a tent, the sounds at night and in the early morning were amazing. These are very well equipped and spotlessly clean. We were able to watch many antelope and birds from our balcony.

Walking to the restaurant was fascinating as we often had to pass a white rhino with her baby who had taken up residence on the lawns between the main buildings. We had to pinch ourselves that she was wild as she was so content!

Falaza is not in the Hluhluwe National Park and we had to make a very
early start for our game drive there, but we were given a wake up call. The National Park is about 25mins away, we were able to see many animals there and the rangers cooked a bar-b-q breakfast, before
returning to Falaza.

We were also given a night drive which I found exciting as we saw bush babies amongst other animals. The park is about 800 hectares and has a large herd of rhino as well as wildebeest, giraffes, zebra and warthogs etc

The food was good and the service excellent. All the staff were enthusiastic, charming and helpful. My husband is a keen rugby fan and the manager was kind enough to go home to find the time of the England/France match which we watched whilst keeping an eye on the grazing rhino!! Watching the television will never be the same again.
There was a spa here which looked very nice and there were several options of activities every day. The staff are working very hard to make this an excellent reserve, although I felt more as if I was staying in a comfortable resort than in a game park. There are no wardens at the gates and no restrictions about where to walk [at our previous game park we had to be accompanied by rangers to our lodges after dinner because of the lions and wandering hippos] nevertheless it was a super place to stay.
