Zululand Safari Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 16, 2014

My wife booked us in at the Zululand Safari Lodge for the long weekend, from Saturday 15 June - 16 June 2014. In essence 2 nights. From the time we arrived the process was smooth. The welcome was excellent. Our chalet-unit 1, was neat & clean with good presentation. The location is excellent, being just a few minutes from the N2 Freeway. Our room was excellent. This was a self catering unit with a well organized kitchen area & patio & a well presented sleeping area, a nice dressing room & nice ablution area with suite shower. Given the fact that we booked in winter, our chalet was warm & cosy. We enjoyed the animals that grazed around the lodge. Parking is secure, well lit walkways & parking area. Apart from the dirt road to the lodge we really have No complaints. We will definitely return & have absolutely No doubt in our recommendation of this lodge. Given that the chalets have been upgraded, we rate this Lodge in the top percentile of the lodges in this region, considering the value & location & presentation. Definitely worth a visit.

Room Tip: units 1-10 v good, close to parking area & Not far from swimming pool.

Our room was quite a unique experience with its straw ceilings and animal sounds outside. There was an ensuite bathroom but in addition to this there was an outside shower which I used in the morning as the monkeys chattered to me from the tree above. The comfort of the accommodation was great but it was 500 metres from the lodge where one ate breakfast and evening meals. We did not mind the walk especially on our second morning when we had to wait for the giraffes to pass :). We could not fault the staff.

Because of it's location and food I stayed here with my family (wife & twins of 9 years old) 3 days. We found it very disappointing to experience the interaction between the white staff and the black hard working men/ladies.
Even Jade found is necessary (in presence of the guests) to punish a black reception colleague while she was correcting a mistake she made in our settlement ... brrrrr!

On top of the, I bought a WIFI ticket but it did not work for Apple devices. Although the staff knew this they checked my ticket on usage before cancelling this item on our invoice .. what a distrust!

Dear Sir,

We are truly shocked and appalled by the experience that you had at Ubizane. As you can see from our various reviews of both our lodges, our guests always have a wonderful stay at our facilities and enjoy the friendly service of all our staff.

We are truly sorry that you feel distrusted by our staff checking the voucher before removing it from your account, this is not intentional, it is merely a standard procedure that they are trained to follow, as at any establishment world-wide, the facts are always checked before a refund is given.

With regards to the incident that you refer to, the manager in question has been investigated and disciplined accordingly to the full letter of the law, this is an isolated incident of a manager-in-training that has treated a junior staff member in a manner that is not condoned by our close-knit Ubizane family and our company policies. I can assure you, as you can also see by the various other reviews on here as well, that there is no racial distinction between our staff members and we are truly a close-knit family.

We as a team feel saddened and distressed that you have chosen a public platform such as TripAdvisor to make such an irresponsible generalizing racial statement. It saddens us that a review like this will now for a very long time dampen all our positive reviews that we as a team of all races worked so hard to deserve, and would have preferred that you address this with senior management directly allowing us to address this isolated incident without having to broadcast your personal feelings on such a public forum. There is no opportunity for us to redeem ourselves after a damaging statement such as yours.

If we understand your review correctly, there was no lack in the actual service provided, it was the unbecoming incident that you were upset about, discrediting all the hard work that the other staff members have provided by deeming our lodge to have poor service. Please feel free to contact us directly so that we can resolve this matter directly.

I booked this place very last minute and travelled from umhlanga with my family.
Really easy to find - straight up the N2. We had a welcome drink and a hot towel on arrival.
The check in was fast and informative.
I really didn't expect too much from this place and was completely blown away with the perfect setting and beautiful accommodation. We saw zebra, merecats and impala just wondering around the little huts.
The lady that helped us with our luggage was so lovely and gave us lots of useful tips.
We stayed in a rondeval, number 11, which had a huge double bed, bunk beds, full kitchen, huge bath and separate shower. Everything was really clean and looked like new.
There is a turn down service at 7pm when they leave you a sweet on your pillow and a bedtime story.
There is also a pool, tv room, braai areas and a fire pit. They have covered all bases here bar a shop, but they will provide charcoal, fire lighters, utensils etc.
If you choose to dine at the tree lodge - it's about a 600m walk along a dirt track - you would be best to drive or maybe they provide a little pick up? We didn't dine but was told it was R190 for the evening buffet meal which starts at 7pm.
Memorial gate is about ten mins drive away so perfectly positioned for game drives to hluhluwe.
But honestly, I was more than happy to relax around the huts and pool I just wish we could have stayed longer.

Thank you for taking the time to write this lovely review!
We are really glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Safari Lodge. Ubizane Wildlife Reserve strives to present guests with an opportunity to get away from the busy city life and relax amongst the African bush while living in comfortable chalets. It is wonderful to hear that you saw some game around the lodge! They love the watering hole at Safari and often make appearances.
We really hope to see you back at Ubizane again soon for some more relaxing time by the pool!

Warm Regards

We stayed for only one night, but it was a wonderful experience. Friendly staff, nice lodges, spacious, nicely decorated and clean. Very good food (dinner buffet and breakfast buffet) in front of a big fire place. Should not forget to mention the stars at night.... amazing.

We stayed at Zululand Safari Lodge with two families and throughly enjoyed the bush experience. We had a fantastic guide, Hamilton, who was patient and very experienced. Excellent game sightings in Hluhluwe game reserve. Was lovely to see general game around the lodge such as giraffe, warthog and Nyala. We chose the catered option and the food was good. The management staff could have been more genuine and accomodating - cancelled our drive as we arrived 20 mins late. Otherwise, a great holiday and manageable even with small children.

Room Tip: ask for a room at the front so don't have other guests walking past you along the walkway peerin...

Thank you for your wonderful review of Zululand Safari Lodge!
We strive to present our guests with excellent service and a real bush experience while living in the lap of luxury. We try to upgrade our services and take your comments to heart in order to keep our standards high. We regret to hear that you did not make the game drive and felt like we were not accommodating. Unfortunately we cannot delay our game drives because our ranger has strict time schedules to follow as well as the restricted daylight during winter time which makes it difficult to get enough sunlight for game viewing before sunset. We hope to see you again soon so you can enjoy the game drive you missed!

Looking forward to welcoming you to our special, “Place of Calling”, again!

Review update (November 2012)
When I first saw the reviews and pictures of this place (posted in 2009) I decided not to go there. Instead I was going to go to Zululand tree house because I stayed there before and liked it very much. The problem for us is that Zululand tree house offers full board and we intended to be at HluHluwe-Umfolozi park all day long, meaning we would miss breakfast and lunch. The only other option was Zululand Safari lodge which is in the same property as the Tree House, consequently only 7km form the entrance to the park.

When I called the lodge to ask them about the reviews they told me me that the Zululand Safari lodge was now under the management of the Ubizane group along with Zululand tree house. They send me a PDF file showing the apparent improvements, and assured me the situation had changed that review was posted, so I decided to give it a try.

I was pleasantly surprise to find out that the rooms were nothing like in the pictures posted back in 2009. The rooms are really nice and clean, the bathroom is in very good condition. it's evident that this units were renovated to meet the standards of quality of the Tree Lodge. The difference between Tree Lodge and Safari is that the first one is comprised of log cabins and the second are concrete rondavels. I particularly like the log cabin feeling so I didn’t expect to like the rondavels. But I have to admit I did like them. They were not only comfortable but nicely decorated. At night they prepare your bed and leave you some sweets . It was nice to see they paid attention to details.

There is no restaurant at the lodge but you can have your dinner at the tree house. The food is great and the personnel were really helpful and friendly. I have to admit I was expecting to be disappointed, but luckily it wasn’t the case at all. So, yes I would recommend this lodge to anybody that wants an “accommodation only” basis. You still have the option of having your meals at the Tree Lodge if you were to change your mind about spending the whole day in Hluhluwe-Umfolozi parks as we did.

I am posting some pictures we took of the rooms.

Hope this help others.
