Bonamanzi Game Reserve

We first went to Bonamanzi in 1974 when there was just 1 very basic tree house! Our last visit was in 1999 and although this time we were unable to stay in the now vastly superior, but really nice, trees houses, our stay at Lalapanzi "Lodge" was more than we could ever have dreamt of!! We were 5 adults and our 2 grandchildren and we all had rooms in one of the "combo" units which was wonderful! The rooms were really MOST comfortable and linen of extremely high quality, shower, WC and basin adequate, kettle, crockery and beverages in each room and a covered, furnished patio outside each one too!
A paved, lit walkway links the rooms to the central core consisting of Reception (with a deck overlooking a dam which is the home for a fair sized crocodile or 2), Dining "room" (where the meals were superb with a very good selection of food and full of atmosphere - even a "teddy" miniture couch provided for young weary heads after a busy day exploring!) and a comfortable lounge combined with a viewing deck right on the edge of the "home" dam. The pleasantly maintained grounds are shared with a variety of buck and warthog and the bird life is prolific. The walks of various lengths are well signposted, but the self-drive ones not so!! The ONLY area that needs improvement!!

The boat cruise offered on the Hluhluwe River is extremely good value as you are given an interesting game drive just to get there, and returning after dark gives you opportunity to see some of the night-;ife - even chameleons!!

A most relaxing haven and one to which we would all return! We did a recce of the camp sites and the tree-houses too - and then there are still the 2 self-catering lodges available!!

Our Grandchildren aged 10 and 6 years had the freedom to wander safely down to the communal area and had a great time!!

Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park within easy reach!

We stayed at Bonamonzi four days in October - and I keep thinking about those four wonderful days.
We stayed in chalet 14 that opened onto the bush - nothing else in sight. It was such a delight to sit on the porch with coffee in hand early each morning and watch the antelopes in the bush. Coffee and tea maker was provided in room along with two bottles of water each day.
After this peaceful awakening we walked to the dining area for a huge breakfast. We purchased a package which included our breakfast and dinner - a very reasonable package. The staff arranged a tour of Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve for us-could not have been better. Another day the staff arranged a trip to St. Lucia for us( we had a rental car). Another day the staff arranged a trip to the Dumazulu Traditional Village. The staff was always most accomodating.
After our daily trip , we took a glass of wine to sit by the watering hole to watch the numerous birds and animals as the sun was setting. Soon we would see the nightly boma fire burning by the dining area where we would sit until time for dinner. The food at dinner was 5 star. A great variety was offered each night - we would stay at Bonamonzi just for the food.
One night we took the night safari in Bonamonzi - saw bushbabies, giraffes, elephants, and various antelopes.
Oh we want to return to Bonamonzi - and to think this was my 3rd choice when I was making plans - now it would be my first!

We stayed at Bonamanzi Game Park for just one night as part of a three week trip to eastern South Africa with our 7 yo son.

Bonamanzi is a privately owned game reserve with lots of options for accommodation from luxury to rustic, scattered around 4000 hectares. We opted for a treehouse as a novelty and also as birdwatchers we would be right there amongst the wildlife. And we were certainly away from it all - each treehouse is situated 100s of metres from the next, if anything we felt a bit too isolated.

We were in a 2 bed treehouse. The wooden structure is circular: bedrooms, lounge and WC upstairs reached by a walkway or steep stairs, while downstairs are two separate locked rooms for kitchen and bathroom which lead directly off the open al fresco dining area at the base of the treehouse. Effectively, we just lived upstairs as unless you were self-catering, you didn't need or want to venture outside once it was dark. The equipment was rustic, beds small (had to be to fit into the wedge shaped rooms), but it had a/c and we spent very little time there when not asleep.

The central reception area is all new and quite swish, with the restaurant nearby. We were about a 10-15 minute drive along sandy tracks from the treehouse to reception, to give an idea of the scale of the place. Although we were given a map, the rather vague staff at reception did not explain about the range of activities, meals or anything useful. Perhaps for this reason, the whole place felt a bit disorientating, though this may also be because we only stayed one night.

Food in the central restaurant was buffet style, plentiful and varied at both dinner (which was a bit like an indoor braai) and breakfast. There is a lively English ex-pat lady who kept everything moving. We were late back from our excursion in the morning but they kindly kept some breakfast for us.

Wildlife was great, with Nyala, Zebra, Wildebeeste etc grazing right be the side of the road, and Warthogs on the lawn by reception. Red Duikers are the cutest of them all. We took an early morning drive out onto the Hluhluwe river plain with our guide Mishak, who introduced himself to us at dinner the night before. We were the only people on the trip which was in a very battered old vehicle. The tracks were incredibly bumpy and only just passable. It seems the game park owners are simply not spending enough money on the place - the boat for river excursions was also out of service when we were there.

Anyway, Mishak was a great character and good guide, and we saw some excellent birds, best of all being Rosy-Throated Longclaw which was our main reason for taking the trip. But we had a super time having coffee and snacks by the river, with our son lining up the telescope on Kittlitz's Plover, Caspian Tern and Greater Flamingo to name but a few.

So, a nice place but it needs more investment and more personal attention to its guests to make it into a truly great experience.

This was my second visit to Bonamanzi game reserve and it was just as good as the first. The self-catering accomodation in the Tree Houses is basic but perfect for a more rustic experience!

Our Tree House slept four adults comfortably, and the upstairs part even had air conditioning... perfect for us Brits in the heat! The outside area had a BBQ - which is cleaned by staff every morning - and an upstairs deck area with a picnic table.

The kitchen and bathroom are downstairs and form part of the "outside" area, which also has a picnic table. There are locks on both the bathroom and kitchen doors so your stuff is kept safe. There is also a toilet and sink upstairs so no need to wander around in the dark downstairs at night! The kitchen has a fridge/freezer, oven and hob, and plenty of cutlery, plates, glasses, pots and pans etc. The bathroom is huge but only has a shower, and no bath.

The staff were very helpful and friendly and I would recommend the river trip (see pictures).

We were only there for two nights so we didn't experience the rest of what Bonamanzi has to offer. I believe there is more luxurious accomodation on site but we had so much fun "roughing it" (if you could call it that!) the first time that we decided to do it again.

The cost of the Tree House was very cheap, especially travelling with UK currency,

We also spent a day driving around Hluhluwe/Imfolozi game reserve - about a 20 minute drive away - which i would highly recommend. It is much bigger than Bonamanzi and has a huge range of animals, including elephants, rhinos, giraffes, baboons, big cats, zebra etc... basically everything you would want to see!

Great fun if you're after a mini safari experience
