“Always excellent”

we pop in here often for the tomato bruschetta and either the cartoccio pasta, the veg pizza or the calamari penne - always amazing, always service with a smile and so chilled and laid back.

“Clearly popular, but.......”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2013

A pleasant vibe, humming with people. However, this is NOT the place to go if you are looking for great Italian food. Advance reservation - allocated worst table in the place, right by the kitchen pick-up window. Bruschetta - cold toasted baguette bread with a topping - poor at best. Average Pollo salad. Very friendly staff, as observed by other reviewers. In general, food average at best.

“Best atmosphere and waiter - went back a second time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 21, 2013

Florida Road has lots of good restaurant choices but I found Spiga had the best ambience and a great diversity of local clientele which made it a great place to hang out. Also it was here we met one of the friendliest waiters on our trip. I also was tipped off here to the blog http://durbanisyours.co.za

“Rate it on value for money”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 21, 2013

"Spiga" is almost an institution now, and has to be the most successful restaurant in Durban. It never wins awards from the food critics, but it has to be doing something right. Well it is: good, unpretentious food at very reasonable prices, coupled with efficient, friendly service. The wine list is limited, but the prices for all drinks are very reasonable. This restaurant knows what it is doing - get the customers in, don't rip them off, and give them what they want.

Just so you know - it's not fine dining. It's just good, wholesome Italian food. You go there for a fun night with friends, or just to have quick bite on a night you don't want to cook. You can book, but only for the back section. If you want to sit in the main part or on the pavement (perfect during most of the year, and from where you can watch the passing parade), you have to take your chances. During busy time you'll almost certainly have to wait for a table. Be warned, it's usually noisy - but that's part of its vibe.

It's open from very early, and one of the few places in Durban where you can get fed late at night. Speaking of breakfast, one of Durban's best kept secrets is Spiga's "cornettos" - light croissants coated with a frosted glaze. Delicious with coffee.

If I have a gripe, it is that the no smoking laws are not strictly enforced on the pavement area. But for value for money good food - you'd be hard pressed to beat Spiga anywhere in South Africa.
