Our stay at Smiths Cottage was amazing!! The owners Pat & Kieth made us feel so welcome. On our first evening they explained all the nearby sights and things to do in the area. They have a real passion for ensuring their guests have a good time! They really care about their guests and offer lifts into the centre of Durban at little cost. They also offer laundry facilities and internet at a small cost. Our room was extremely clean and was serviced daily. My friend and I felt like we were staying with an aunt and uncle rather than at a backpackers!!

What is there to say about Smith's Cottage other than wonderful. Incredibly close to the center of Durban owners Keith and Pat are a wonderfully accommodating pair. For a small fee (R30) they will transport you to almost anywhere in Durban. The rooms are clean and the property is beautiful. This is not the typical "party hostel" that some might be used to - very quiet which for some is very nice and others might find less appealing. If you are looking for a party it is best to find your way in town or elsewhere and look towards Smith's Cottage as your clean and wonderful sleep retreat.

We stayed at the Smith's Cottage during our stay in Durban on our road trip through South Africa. This place feels like home. The owner's are incredibly helpful and some of the nicest people we ever met. As they have traveled a lot through Africa already they provided us with some really good hints and basically planned half of our trip, After we forgot some of our stuff at the Smith's Cottage they immediately contacted us so we had the chance to get back. So we ended up staying twice at Smith's Cottage and we didn't regret it. The Smith's made our stay in Durban an unforgettable experience. Thank you!

To start with the basics- Smith's Cottage is superbly clean, brilliant value and perfectly safe. The dorm is great if you're on your own and the cabins are awesome if you're with your partner. The bar area's ideal to hang out and the pool's amazing to have at a mere backpackers too... So it's already a great idea to stay there before you add to that the most welcoming atmosphere you will find anywhere and all the extra useful local-area expertise. To say the owners will bend over backwards for you is an understatement. Pat picked me up for free, did everything she could to help me organize the trips I wanted to do and cooked the best home-cooked meals, Keith gave me a tour of the townships, took me to the airpoirt bus and even lent me his credit card at one point to hire a car during my stay! It was a wake up call to meet people as friendly and helpful as the owners, unbelievably kind people! It's just exactly the right base to get around Durban and to go and see the game reserves nearby. 5 star stuff.

My sister and I stayed at Smith's Cottage and had a fantastic experience. The owners, Keith and Pat, are absolutely lovely people and their hospitality was fantastic. We arrived at the cottage on the Baz Bus quite late and they waited up for us, greeted us with a smile, and offered us a cup of tea even though it was the middle of the night. Keith also had loads of recommendations of things for us to do. When we said we wanted to try Bunny Chow, he not only gave us suggestions, but also drove us down the road to a restaurant that he recommended so we could try it. In addition, the place was clean and comfortable. Overall, we had a fantastic stay and next time I'm in Durban I will definitely go back.

The owners are great people, very nice, funny and helpful. They also make ticket bookings/reservations for you (Bazbus for example) and are always willing to drive you anywhere.
The place feels like home, is very safe and comfortable.
The dorms, beds, showers, and swimmingpool are all great and everything is perfectly clean!
I came here several times the last few months, and every stay was perfect. In the end it really felt like coming home.

The cottage is run by a couple, Keith and Pat. They are a wonderful couple and I haven't seen such hospitality in ages. Amazing place. Highly recommended! The place has a pool and a common area near the pool. You can just hang around with your friends their or eat.
The owners also have dogs which are super friendly.
