Description: Afro’s started in a trailer at “Durban Day”, Peoples Park in September 2012. That was the first of two trailers that travelled durbs for two years, pulling up at the finest markets, events, shindigs & private jols. In 2014 we moved into our first shop on South Beach, serving surfers, cyclists, power walkers & anyone who agrees it’s “lekker by die see!” We’ve moved into a 9 locations since then. and we’ll keep moving.

Situated on Durban promenade, Afros Chicken has the scenery, price and quality to make u come back for more. I had a chicken burger and fries that was better than most. Well done. Keep it like this and I'll become a regular....

MANY will know the bright yellow AFRO’S CHICKEN trailer that does the rounds at markets. Many will have queued round the block for Mathew Hancock’s take on chicken and tjips. Well, good news, the trailer has morphed into a bright yellow container that is taking South Beach by storm.
Hancock has set up his own little “mjondolo in one of the beach kiosks built for the World Cup, and he’s painting the white elephant yellow, lifting an area that is a bit of a culinary wasteland.
It’s nothing flash, but it’s a great place to chill, sitting under the simple log roof that’s open to the elements and watching the passing parade. A cool skater dude makes it look so easy, a clapped-out jogger less so. There’s the body beautiful and some bodies horrible proudly on display.
Dog walkers stop by to let young Fido take a drink. There are water bowls put out specially. And, on a clear day, you have views from the Bluff to uMhlanga. What more could you want? Well, a chicken burger to match.
The menu, too, is simple. Bacon and egg rolls, chicken strips, chicken quarters, chicken burgers and of course, those famous tjips. These are hand-cut and fried with the skin on – and there’s nothing like proper chips at the beach.
I had mine slathered in Hancock’s own peri-peri sauce, which while not particularly fiery, packed a flavour punch. Those counting calories can replace the tjips with coleslaw. But I wouldn’t recommend losing those tjips. Rather order coleslaw on the side.
The chicken burger, served in a cardboard tray, was melt-in-themouth delicious, succulent and tasty; the roll fresh; the sliced tomato ripe. It’s available hot (with periperi) or “koel” (that’s lemon and garlic). I went with hot. I’m allcompliments.
“It’s basically a grilled chicken sandwich,” Hancock tells me.
“Well, a lot of the big boys in the chicken game can’t get that one right,” I point out.
The rest is even simpler. You can wash your chicken down with Sir Juices, Bos iced tea and Lineage Coffee. This is the coffee roasted by South Africa’s top barista, Craig Charity, so it’s a quality product. The cappuccino in a paper cup raised the bar. I ordered another.
It’s certainly worth stopping just to put your feet up if you’ve been pounding the promenade. Abonus is that Afro’s offer surfers and swimmers a key service: a friend who uses Addington Beach often was very excited by this. Hey, I might even become a South Beach regular.
