When my sister suggested a visit to the Botanical Gardens, I wasn't expecting to find this oasis in the middle of the city. As overseas visitors, we were delighted with the variety of plants & trees, many of which we'd never seen before. There are lots of different areas, beautifully tended grassy gardens, benches to sit and watch birds going about their business and dragon flies skimming the surface of the pond. Certainly a place to get your head together and be at one with the world. The only disappointment was that the Visitor Centre was closed.

Free entry to beautiful gardens and a small lake. Take a picnic basket and blanket to lie under the trees and read a book.

I am not a botanist, but this garden has some very interesting tree species and is worth the visit. Birds are abundant, large grassy areas, quiet (for a garden in the middle of a city, that is). Some great flowering trees, even a monkey or two. Free- no entry fee. This garden/park is safe- we never encountered vagrants or questionable characters during our visit. There are patrolling security guards.

It is incredible to think that these Botanical Gardens are in the centre of a city - such an amazing, green, open, pretty, happy garden - well tended, with benches scattered around, children's laughter, dogs on leashes, bridal parties having their photographs taken, a little cafe that sells delicious tea and scones ... so pretty! A sunken garden, an orchid house, a pond with fountain - treat yourself - cancel an afternoon, pack a blanket and a good book and chill out!

This place has it all, great swimming and water slides for all the family, it is like a smaller version of Seaworld inOrlando. Fantastic Aquarium with 24 varieties of sharks. Lots of places to eat, including a restaurant in an old ship that serves the famous Durban Bunny Chow -a curry served in a hollowed out loaf of bread, which you have to try!
