“Luxurious on the outside, shabby on the inside”
Reviewed April 22, 2013 via mobile

In our 16 day trip the Balmoral was advertised as a luxurious beach side hotel where we could enjoy the luxury of a four star hotel.

It turned out to be the biggest disappointment. We were put in a room so small it was more like a closet than a room. The window looked out onto the backside parking area. Towels were stained (not just a few stains but 'yuck I don't want to know who used this before me' type stains.)

It seems like the hotel doesn't have its priorities straight. It wants to look like a posh hotel on the golden mile in Durban, but every penny spent on its appearance is a penny lost on quality of service.

Staff was quite indifferent; it almost felt like it was a hassle to them that there were guests.

Not all was bad though; breakfast was good: lots of choice with cooked to order eggs and a big buffet with lots of different foods.

Old-style hotel on a stunning beach. But at least for now stay away from it: everything, really everything, is stained, dented, bent, worn out or broken. I hope they find the money to restore it to its former glory sometime soon. At least it was not filthy, but the toilet seat was broken, airco was noisy, safe box mounted with just two half inch screws on wood and about every wire was loose. I can’t believe they charge these rates and claim a four star badge. The staff is trying, but that can’t compensate for the quality. I had to stay there one night only and that was quite enough.

The Balmoral takes you back to a different time, with its quaint, old-world charm & stately elegance. The location is superb - it's literally on the beach & convenient to safely take a walk/jog on the Golden Mile. It is quite safe to walk along the beach, as the hotel is in front of a police station. The roar of sea is a calming thing to hear at night through the window, however, I'd imagine that during high season it can become a bit noisy until well into the night - as the hotel is in front of the seaside rides & attractions, as well as various cocktail bars.

Mine was a sea-facing room on the second floor & was really quite huge. The bed is comfy & the pillows soft, so this made for a pleasant sleep. The bathroom is a bit small in comparison, although it has everything one needs - the lovely smelling shower gel is a bonus. An electronic safe is provided in the room, as well as DSTV & air con.
The food is not anything particularly grand, but tasty enough (although the service was super-friendly one day & painfully slow the next). Breakfast is a buffet & we had a set menu for our other meals, as part of our business trip.
The hotel is well-kept & its staff are friendly & attentive as well.

Overall, an extremely enjoyable stay in Durban. The hotel's location is really it's selling point.

I have laughed so much about that tiny steam powered lift. Yes it's better to walk especially an easy walk to first floor.
The location of the hotel is awesome but not the kind of awesome imagined for a peaceful holiday. The beach front is jam packed -busy till the late hours of the morning - more like a commuter stretch. There buses and mini buses bringing in people and there is a lot of apartment buildings reasonably priced for an average person to enjoy a holiday at the beach front. So this area is not a Mauritius type beach front. The rooms are generally clean including the bathroom- and especially the towels smell fresh and are clean. Reception staff non existence customer service- Restaurant staff were very courteous and friendly. The food was average- at breakfast they make this egg wrap for an omelet. The pastries are not good at all- it's as though they baked them 3 days before then freeze them. At dinner I at least had a decent lamb curry- probably the best among the food we eat from nearby restaurants.
We ended up driving 30min out of Durban to Ballito to enjoy decent time at the beach.
All in all Durban has a beautiful stretch of the beach but they are mostly public. The whole experience is average- difficult to find and get info about good restaurants etc.

Can't really say many good things except that it's Bang on the Golden Mile & Rooms are Decent. Recommended for stay ONLY & ONLY if you get a Deal/Discount. It is a mistake to pay the full rack rate & stay here!!

Breakfast was a big let down both in terms of spread, options, quality or attentiveness. Highly Understaffed. You end up carrying your own luggage to the rooms. A good Looking Property but not maintained well. The staff doesn't really care much about most of the things.

Except for Location scores low on everything. It claims to be a 4 STAR. I wouldn't give it more than 2 at MAX!

Room Tip: Please prefer rooms with Sea View Only!!

Great location, in fornt of the beach....Balmoral is well priced clean hotel...where you can negotiate price I'd you stay for a few days.
Good service but you will never see the same receptionist or waiter again...I have met the manager once and he was not pleasant. Dont be shocked as foreigner if that all hotels in SA ask Money first!
kudos to Blamoral for competing with the big brand hotels surrounding it!
When getting rooms, you Sa old asks for the room with views.

Room Tip: If you want to be in Durban on a budget .....

I love going to the Balmoral for, what used to be their famous buffet. But what a shock this last time, it was a shadow of its former self the Hotel is looking a bit depressed and starting to slip into a bad way. The staff where disinterested and the food was just shocking. To write this depresses me because The Blamoral was one of “The Old Greats” I beg the owners and managers don’t let this Hotel go down.
