“Excellent service, great views”
Reviewed November 21, 2005

My husband and I stayed at the Durban Hilton for 6 nights and had a great time. The hotel is in the CBD and so there isn't much around the hotel to do in the evenings, however during the day it offers easy access on foot to the major sights of Durban City Centre. My husband has diamond VIP status so we were upgraded to an executive room on the 13th floor, we also had use of the excellent executive lounge on the 14th floor. The lounge has a complimentary bar and snacks. The staff in the lounge were fantastic, arranging various trips, restaurant bookings etc. the view from the balcony is amazing. Try the hotel's own restaurant, the Rainbow Terrace, we went for the buffet option and had a huge choice of curries, pasta, fish etc. The dessert buffet was particularly good. Total cost around £15 a head with wine. The rooms are beautifully appointed and although a little small by South African standards are no smaller than any of the London Hiltons we have stayed in. We would definitely recommend this hotel and hope to stay there again soon.

Location was not great with very little around within walking distance. All the common areas, lobby, restaurants, club room were nice and still okay overall. However, the hotel rooms were a bit dated and in need of a refurbishment, especially the musty carpet. We were upgraded to a very spacious corner room and given access to the club floor (husband is a gold member), but the bed was soft and uncomfortable and the club floor selection at breakfast and snacks was subpar. However, the desk service on the club floor was very efficient. The shower leaked and flooded the bathroom floor each time we used it. The in-room lighting was poor and hardly sufficient for reading. The pool was outdoor, unheated and freezing cold.

An oasis of calm in Durban. For added value, it's worth investing an extra Euro 30 (on top of your room charge) to avail of the Club lounge on the sixteenth floor. The views of downtown Durban and its environs are spectacular. And the lounge serves a tasty array of hot snacks and drinks which would sate the appetite/thirst of the hungriest/thirstiest individual.

The night we arrived in Durban played host to the fiercest electrical storm of the Summer. We watched awestruck from our vantage point on the sixteen floor of the Hilton as the sheet/forked lightning wended its way across the Durban skyline for more than an hour. Better than any Hollywood film (which was just as well since - as explained below - the controller of the television signal in the hotel never allowed us to watch a single feature film through to its conclusion).

The room was great. Cleaner than clean. And the beds were so comfortable they invited instant relaxation. In the morning, the power shower reminded me I was alive with its intense jets of water which would wake even the most recalcitrant of human beings.

You can park your hired car in the basement of the hotel for a very reasonable rate. And the trip to the airport takes just fifteen minutes by highway from the Hilton. All in all, a comfortable and secure hotel.

The executive in the Club lounge explained to us that one of the Hilton employees was continuously switching the television signal in his search for the perfect picture. Only problem was that he always seemed to interfere with the channels just as a feature film was reaching its conclusion. Twice he pulled the plug just minutes before the end of a film. I have yet to discover whether he did this just for hell of it or it was just an unfortunate coincidence that I never managed to watch the end of a single film in the Hilton hotel in Durban. If, however, you leave the television controller out of the equation, all of the other Hilton employees we encountered during our stay there were welcoming, friendly and kind human beings.
