“Easter Weekend April 2012 - Brilliant”
Reviewed April 22, 2012

I have returned to the Garden Court South Beach Hotel with my family and additional 2 guests over the Easter Weekend 2012 and had no issues. Reading through some of the negatives that people do experience in some reviews are easily remedied. If you feel that you are being illtreated at the hotel or that you have a toilet that is not flushing, it is as easy as speaking to management. I am sure that the problem will be sorted out. Personally, I cannot handle criticism that is not constructive and not of any value. Our experience with this hotel has so far been good, and yes we are planning to return over the Easter Weekend 2013. For all the readers looking for good value, simple, clean and safe hotel this is the one to stay in. If you expect 5 star accommodation then pay for it and go and stay at a 5 star hotel bottom line.

This hotel offers brilliant seafront views of the Indian Ocean and the promenade, the breakfast is of high quality and you are spoilt for choice. The staff was friendly. You are close to most of Durban's highlights, uShaka Marine World, Moses Madhiba Soccer Stadium, the Ricksha Bus, Mini Town just to mention a few. Safety was not a concern for me, then again I am from Cape Town. My advice whether you are in London, New York or Rio is to watch your back and do not walk the streets at 02:30 in the morning because then you looking to be mugged. Police presence over the period that I spent at this Hotel was good and police visibily was high.

High noise levels from the lifts are still present which needs to be managed by the hotel. This is a common issue which I do agree with other patrons that stayed at the hotel. Hotel Management should look and decreasing the volume of the lift "pinging" indicator when the lift arrives at the floor.

Furthermore, there is noting wrong with this hotel, just people expectations.

Room Tip: Choose sea facing rooms away from the lifts.

My family and i have been staying at this hotel for many years and this specific stay was one that really upset me. It was a stay for business and pleasure. I was asked to vacate the breakfast room as i was dressed inappropriately. Had on a long full sleeve kaftan and the breakfast room supervisor said that that dress code was not allowed. They should have had a notice put up stating dress code. I left da breakfast room in tears as da other staff were talking about me in their language and i am born and brought up knowing that language very well. Was at da brkfast room at 7 am as i had a very sick baby to attend to so i thought id get done wid breakfast then let da others come thereafter. But i left there with a lump in my throat. Had a luke warm shower da night i reached didnt have to open cold water. Dats da last ting u need on holiday. Asked for a cleaner as my baby toppled my lunch or i even said send me da vacuum if there are no cleaners i will do it myself but no response. Rooms right near lifts are a no no and da sound of the next rooms flush is annoying. I look at this stay as my bad luck.

Having stayed at this hotel twice before on short trips to Durban, we decided that it would be good for an eight day stay. I am happy to report that this was the case. As always the staff were friendly and helpful. We were allocated a room opposite the lifts which we know from experience can be noisy, both from waiting guests and the lifts themselves constantly 'pinging' on arrival at each floor. We immediatly requested a change which we were given without hassle. There were one or two issues with the room (flat batteries in the safe, draw front coming off and aircon that would not turn off) but these were promptly resolved and left us to enjoy our stay. As always breakfast were good and the staff are lovely as I have said before.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the lifts are preferable for a quiet stay

The Garden Court, Southern Sun, South Beach Hotel is probably at the wrong end of the Esplanade and is not the sort of place that one would want to wander around after dark. The hotel is situated opposite the Tropicana, which has a reputation of its own, and looks as if it has seen better days. Rooms, for a short stay, are adequate and the shower was good. Parking comes at a cost (R55.00 per day) and, at nearly R1,000.00/night, this is a service that should be provided at no charge. Breakfast is varied and very good.

My family and I stayed at this hotel in August 2011, my only negative input regarding this hotel is that the noise levels in the early hours of the morning where room doors and closet doors are slammed shut is a bit of a let down as you are awoken from your holiday rest. It was also extremely noisy in the passages. The positive side, is that I felt generally safe, breakfast I considered to be extremely good, view from hotel "perfect". I have booked this hotel again and will be returning in April 2012 this time with 2 additional guests. I just hope the above negative will be sorted.

Room Tip: Considering my wife, 9 year old son. 3 year old daughter and myself stayed and shared a room, I woul...

Durban... I expected a lot from Durban, but when we got there we were warned so many time about our safety that it did leave a negative feeling about it. I don't know if the warnings were in place or if our tour guide was just over protective, but because of this I didn't enjoy Durban as I thought I would.

The hotel was nice though, situated on the boulevard with views on the ocean. This is all great. We were on the 22nd floor, which was really nice. The rooms were also spacious and clean, but our room was close to the elevator which wasn't very nice. So make sure to ask for a room further down the hall, because the elevator makes a lot of noise as do the people who come out of it ;-)

When we we're planning to have dinner the manager gave us some attitude when we wanted to put some table next together as we were dining with a large group. In the end we all had to sit separate, which was very weird. The food was good a bit expensive for the food you were getting. Our waiter was very friendly and happy, so that made up for a lot.

The boulevard in front of the hotel was very lively and busy until late. As we were warned not to go out and if we did we had to wear neutral clothes, wear no jewellery, no money and no camera's, we weren't really eager to go out. Which was unfortunate, because we would love to see and enjoy some of the street life there. We should have gone anyway.

The hotel was very busy and at breakfast it was very crowed. So the hotel left us with mixed feelings. Like I said the views were great as were the rooms, but everything around it was so so.

Hope this review helped you in your choice ;-)

The Garden Court South Beach provides good value in a neighbourhood with quite mixed character. The staff is excellent and very service minded. The breakfast very rich and varied, albeit in a breakfast room that can be a bit noisy.
Don't expect luxury - this is a 3-star hotel, nothing more. No glamour. But a good three star hotel with spacious rooms and a wonderful view to the sea. You can go swimming directly from the hotel, just crossing the street.
Unfortunately, the neighbourhood is considered a bit risky at night, so you be careful at night.

So if you are into a place with spacious, clean rooms with a view, the Garden Court South Beach may be the right choice.

Room Tip: Go for the upper levels.
