Garden Court South Beach
Ranked #4 of 43 Hotels in Durban
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed December 18, 2011

The Garden Court South Beach provides good value in a neighbourhood with quite mixed character. The staff is excellent and very service minded. The breakfast very rich and varied, albeit in a breakfast room that can be a bit noisy.
Don't expect luxury - this is a 3-star hotel, nothing more. No glamour. But a good three star hotel with spacious rooms and a wonderful view to the sea. You can go swimming directly from the hotel, just crossing the street.
Unfortunately, the neighbourhood is considered a bit risky at night, so you be careful at night.

So if you are into a place with spacious, clean rooms with a view, the Garden Court South Beach may be the right choice.

Room Tip: Go for the upper levels.

Stayed here for one night on business and would go along with most of the earlier comments.
The porter who helped me to my room was a bit effusive, lovely bloke though. The room, at the front of the hotel was a bit tired and the carpet looked like it could do with a good steam clean rather than a vacuum but no dirt as far as I could tell and the bathroom was clean.
The views of the harbour entrance are very good from the higher rooms, if you're a ship spotter you're going to enjoy this.
The bed and pillows were clean and comfy. I slept very well, however I had neglected to draw the curtains the previous evening and it gets light quite early at this time of year.
Still it was nice to sip a cup of the Rooibos (have I spelt that correctly?) tea supplied in the room whilst I watched Durban beachfront come to life below me.
WiFi is available but you have to pay for it, no unsecure wireless networks in the area, unfortunately.
Plenty of channels on the telly though
I had lunch at the hotel and it was fine, dinner at a place just down the road, mutton curry and Castle Lager while you watch the world go by and the ocean as a backdrop.
A pretty good evening...
It is a rough looking neighbourhood, as some have mentioned, but I have to say I didn't feel threatened as I wandered about. This might have been the Castle or the fact I kept to the main beachfront road when it got dark. The beach area is swamped with security and coppers during the day and there seemed to be several around at night as well.
The hotel staff were uniformly pleasant and friendly, breakfast was a bit of a queue but the room itself is big enough to take everyone, once you've got in, and the selection was good.
And everyone smiles...

Visited Durban on a work trip, but as I had lived here as a young child, it was also a first return to Durban. The hotel was a stone's throw away from where I used to live, and it was interesting to see how the neighbourhood had changed in that time. South Beach is not quite as popular as North Beach, which most people think is a little more up-market, but we had a very pleasant stay at Garden Court. Durban Beach is excellent. Since the World Cup Football, security staff patrol the beaches and nearby areas regularly which has massively improved the atmosphere. Everybody seemed very easy-going and relaxed. South Beach is a little stretch of land in between the beach on the one hand and the harbour on the other hand, and there is quite a bit of poverty around the back of the hotel. Durban Authorities have designated the area as a regeneration zone and are now planning major refurbishsments and I think that it will continue to improve.

The hotel was good (sorry - there is nothing between average and very good, but this hotel sort of sits in the middle). The breakfast was excellent, and the overall rating was let down a little because we had a room on the 11th floor, on the corner of the building, which was great for views in both directions, but it we had strong winds and they rattled around the corner!). Staff were more than pleasant and went out of their way to be helpful. We especially appreciated the offer of a take-away breakfast when we had a 6.30 flight to catch. The doggy-bag breakfast turned out to be really excellent, sandwiches, croissant, orange juice, fruit, yoghurt and snacks, so that it stretched to include lunch too!

I'd be happy to recommend the hotel to anybody on business, or for those having a couple of nights in Durban and are looking for a reasonably priced hotel in a beach front setting. If you want more upmarket and are happy to spend more - look for the North Beach sister-hotel - a 10 minute beach stroll further north.

Room Tip: Try not to have a room on a top floor corner - it can get quite windy right on the waterfront.

There is not much memorable about this hotel. On the plus side: oceanfront. On the minus side: overcrowded breakfast room. Everything else appears bland, average and 20th century.

The hotel is filthy, rude staff, house keeping stealing from guests and management not concerned about customer satissfaction. We were @ rooms 1006 and 1004 with my friends on 23/09/2011 to 25/09/2011.we were illtreated by a house keeping lady (Goodness Radebe) who after we travelled all the way from JHB she knocked violently on our doors insisting that we wait outside while she cleans. I was amazed, reported the matter to management, nothing was said about our complaint. The same lady came back to do the same thing and even steal shoes from us. We found the duvet filthy with a brownish paste on it aand had to sleep with it thruout our stay irrespective of reporting concerns. I,d rather sleep @ a holiday inn than expose my health and belongings. The staff and management at the hotel does not have an idea of what customer service is.
