Owner description: Street Scene Tours was created by Sthembiso Mbonanbi, Jonas Barausse and Richard Powell, in early 2010, with one unique goal set at its core; to showcase Durban to Durbanites. As you can imagine this is by no means the conventional stance of a tour operator, but Street Scene is not your conventional tour operator. They are constantly exploring Durban and its surrounds, ever on the lookout for nuggets of history and the many hidden gems the province has to offer.Durban and its surrounding areas are filled with a rich tapestry of history which is largely unknown not only to tourists, but also its residents. After all, Mahatma Gandhi made Durban his home for many years, and it was just outside Durban that Nelson Mandela cast his vote in the 1994 elections that forever changed South Africa. The great King Shaka Zulu also spent much time on the very land upon which Durbanites now call home. From the city's architecture to its people, Street Scene aims to engulf its guests in all that is Durban. They started out with their focus on locals but soon realized that when you create a set of tours that residents of the city love, you are guaranteed to have tours that visitors to the city will find riveting and unique. There is nothing conventional about Street Scene Tours, and that's just the way we like it.

We came over to South Africa for a month, spending a week in Durban, and we just so happened to find out about Street Scene as we were scouring the internet for things to do.

As soon as we had received a response from Richard, which was almost immediately after we'd initially made contact, we knew we would be opting for a tour or two with them!!
We took the Full Works Tour which is an absolute must! And what was fantastic about it was that they tailored it towards our needs - wanting to try a delicious Bunny Chow they took us to Little Gujarats for lunch, where we devoured this amazing dish! We also wanted to spend a little more time in the township so they took us to a creche they have been supporting.

We were also fortunate enough to be in South Africa for the Annual Reed Dance which takes place in Zululand - Sthembiso took us there and showed us around what turned out to be a unique experience - not overly touristy at the moment, but I think over the next couple of years they could see an influx of visitors for this event. For the whole day Sthembiso kept us entertained and informed - and I have a sneaky suspicion he quite enjoyed the experience himself!!

Richard was fantastic in keeping us informed - having dropped off a list of recommended places to eat and drink at our hotel before we arrived! And nothing was too much for these two entrepeneurs, who really made our stay in Durban a very memorable occasion. They have a real fresh approach to the tours they provide and will undoubtedly be taking Street Scene along a a very successful path!

Ngiyabonga ka khulu Richard and Sthembiso!

Street Scenes is sure to show you a side of South Africa that you would never discover on your own. Led by two born-and-bred Durbanites, Richard and Stehm, Street Scene tours gives you a tour through local eyes. I spent two full days with Street Scenes, and I was happily surprised at every turn. Some highlights include seeing Gandhi's home for more than 20 years, visiting the place where Mandela cast his first vote, and an in-depth Township tour.

One of the best aspects of this tour was that Richard and Stehm are friendly with everyone you meet along the route. You get the sense that the people you meet know and respect them for the type of tour they are running. They are connected to the community, and you can feel confident that you are in good hands. They do an excellent job of peppering in personal experience alongside important historical info.

Amazing, amazing tour!

I was lucky to have found Street Scene Tours thanks to tripadvisor and a previous guest at Rosetta House, I was not disappointed.

Richard Powell and his business partner Sthembiso make a good combination, Richard is a Durban guy and S'the cames from a township and is very knowledgeable on African culture.

The tours they do are not the normal touristy tours they do the off the beaten track tours, which showcases this beautiful city at it's very best highlighting it's diversity and culture. I was lucky to go on 4 tours with them, I've been to a Sangoma healing ceremony where the local people chanted, played drums and we had our feet washed and sipped beer as part of the healing ceremony. I was taken to visit a rastafarian family who live in caves. We walked in the markets in Victoria Market, the meat, herb and bead markets. We walked in a township meeting the local people and children - where in the world am I going to do that again?

If you are in Durban check them out, you will not be disappointed

I found them thanks to the tourist junction and it was such a great surprise. It was my best tour and activy (aside the world cup) when I was in South Africa.
First, what I appreciate is that they made me pay the exact same price as I was on my own for the tour (a lot of people don't do the tour if you are only one and if they do, they make you pay for 2 people minimum).
Then the tour itself was just great and while doing it I had a lot of history. Richard and his associate know the history of their country, Durban and the townships really well and I learned a lot of things. We went to see Gandi house, then a creche in the township they try to hel (kids have nothing there) and someone house. I liked a lot the way it was done because it was not like we came to "the zoo" and take picture of misery and people as they were animals (like in Soweto). Here it was really respectful and the fact also we are not too many doing the tour (this time it was just me), make it really personal and it was great. People were really nice and sweet. I never felt unsafe at all. They even told me people were really happy that actually "White people" or people out of the township came to them to see how they live. We had a great and simple lunch (barbecue, nice meat) in the township. Thenk we went to see the market, where Nelson Mandela voted for the first time when he was out of jail. The tour is really complete and Richard doesn't count his time. Last but not least, I had a chance on the day to enter a zoulou ceremony and that was just amazing. It is my best memory of South Africa.
Durban is a really nice city (a lot of people told me bad things about it before) but I like it, like the atmosphere, found a lot of nice people (specially the owners of Rosetta House) and the food was amazing and cheap on Florida Road. I love it. If you go to Durban, please believe me, do a tour with Street Scene.
