Owner description: Street Scene Tours was created by Sthembiso Mbonanbi, Jonas Barausse and Richard Powell, in early 2010, with one unique goal set at its core; to showcase Durban to Durbanites. As you can imagine this is by no means the conventional stance of a tour operator, but Street Scene is not your conventional tour operator. They are constantly exploring Durban and its surrounds, ever on the lookout for nuggets of history and the many hidden gems the province has to offer.Durban and its surrounding areas are filled with a rich tapestry of history which is largely unknown not only to tourists, but also its residents. After all, Mahatma Gandhi made Durban his home for many years, and it was just outside Durban that Nelson Mandela cast his vote in the 1994 elections that forever changed South Africa. The great King Shaka Zulu also spent much time on the very land upon which Durbanites now call home. From the city's architecture to its people, Street Scene aims to engulf its guests in all that is Durban. They started out with their focus on locals but soon realized that when you create a set of tours that residents of the city love, you are guaranteed to have tours that visitors to the city will find riveting and unique. There is nothing conventional about Street Scene Tours, and that's just the way we like it.

We took the tour to Lesotho up through the Sani Pass in a 4 x 4. The scenery was fantastic. It was probably our favorite day in Durban. Ask for Rudi for your tour guide; he took us up, and he was incredible. Not only was he very candid about South African culture, he also was very familiar with the locals in Lesotho. He literally knew everyone we passed and could tell us stories about individual people instead of just the usual spiel about the culture. Also, he is a professional photographer, so all the pictures he took of us were great! One thing to remember for the Sani Pass tour is to take your passport for the South Africa-Lesotho border and some money for trinkets that you can buy at the local village and drinks. You can have a drink at the highest pub in Africa!

Sthembiso and Richard created a memorable experience for me and my students which they are still talking about several weeks later. Highly recommended for travelers who want a unique experience and an opportunity to see South Africa's greatest treasure; it's people.

We arranged a see of for a friend going back to states, arranged a 22 seater bus and packed it 19 of us and I can tell you no one got off that bus unhappy or unimpressed. It really was an awesome time. Sthembiso the tour guide kept the good vibes going and knowledge flowing, the stop's were all awesome and the people already there were almost having as much fun as us and were more than happy to join in.

All in all, it's a simple equation - Good Vibes, Awesome Chow and Cold Beer's - executed in pure class and in a new area's to ensure the full enjoyment for all.

I truly do recommend this trip for all.

Go on Adventure peep's, and let Street Scene show you the way

We have an exchange student from England staying with us and wanted him to see a bit more of Durban and had heard good things about Street Scene. Richard in the office was really helpful and we already had a good impression of the company before even embarking on our trip on Sunday 16 February. Thabo was our guide and he was great. I have lived in Durban my whole life and had not been to most places that he took us, John Dube's house, Kwa-mashu, the beautiful waterfall, the market and the lunch in the township. Thabo is an excellent guide and is really knowledgeable. All of us learned a lot, not only our English student!

It's always special for us when we get to take born and bred Durbanites on our Durban tour. Perhaps it the knowledge that the knowledge we impart will be spread further among our fellow citizens long after the tour. Regardless it was a real pleasure and a privilege having you join us.
Warmest Regards
Richard.

We were able to schedule 3 trips with Street Scene and had the wonderful Stembiso to take us around. Our first tour was the city scene tour. Stembiso took us around Durban, we took in the new sights, sounds, smells, experiences. We had our bunny chow lunch and learned much about the city of Durban. The second tour was the shark cage dive. Stembiso picked us up nice and early to head out to swim with the sharks. It was a great thing to sign up for this adventure through street scene because the drive is long from Durban to the launching point of the shark dive. Having a trust worthy and dependable driver makes all the difference. We ended our visit to Durban with a valley scene excursion and that was by far the best. I loved being immersed into the village, seeing how they live, speaking with the people. It was an awesome experience. The only thing I wished I could have done different was to have a pair of shoes to share with a woman in the village. She admired mine as we seemed to be about the same size. She had giant holes in her shoes and I wish I could have taken them right off and given them to her. The view at the valley of 1000 hills is definitely a sight to be seen! I wish we could have also done the township tour, but we didn't have enough time. Overall what I appreciate is that this is a home grown tour group. When I travel I want to go where the locals go, see what they see. With street scene is sure appears that is the experience you get. It isn't a sugar coated tourist trap show, but a real Durban and Kwa-Zulu Natal experience. I was more than happy with our experience with Street Scene and would recommend them to anyone. It does seem to be geared toward the more outgoing traveler, not a passive experience, you really get up in the experience. If you prefer to sit back and watch, without participating, this may not be the tour group for you. However, I would recommend it to everyone as it does get you out of your comfort zone. I do think the friendliness and customer care is tremendous as well, Stembiso definitely was a great companion and guide to have on the trip.
