This place has some potential but unfortunately not the most efficient staff. Although there are no family rooms at the hotel, we were assured that the room will be set up with beds for the kids. At check in this was not done as we were told that the rooms were not yet made up from the previous day and only corrected after many complaints late at night -9pm. We were moved to a larger sub-standard room (Rubble view - see attached photo) for the night and only moved to a more decent room the next day.
The rooms are generally comfortable with good finishing’s. There were plenty cockroaches and mosquitoes around. Showers are not particularly well designed in some of the rooms as there are no shower doors or curtains resulting in wet bathroom floors. The rooms do not have energy efficient lighting probably as a ploy to keep up the “dock look and feel” (use of shabby lamps with Incandescent light bulbs) which further increases the mosquito problem. Aircons were not fully effective in any of the three rooms we stayed in. The breakfast was pretty decent.
The rooms from the 3rd floor onwards proved a much better experience.

Room Tip: Get a room on the third or fourth floor with a balcony

We stayed here to attend a function in very close proximity to the hotel so location was superb. Unfortunately that is where it stopped. The rooms are very small and sparse which for a 4 star hotel i found quite strange especially with there being no bath. The water supply is very suspect and on questioning management about it i was informed that when the hotel is full they lose all the pressure. My shower in the morning was a non existent flow. At times no water was coming out at all. Not a great start to a morning followed by a bad breakfast experience. The food in the buffet section didnt look like it had been attended to for a while and needed replenishmnet followed by a very long wait (15minutes) to get fried eggs. The breakfast area resembled a hostel enviroment albeit in a lovely setting. We chose to eat outside. In saying all of the above the Hotel suited us from a location perspective but disappointed thereafter. The bed however was very comfortable. I think i may have been expecting a lot more which possibly explains the inflated diappointment.

Stayed here in July 2011. Very stylish hotel and had a pleasant stay. Rooms were small but very modern. No door to bathroom/shower. The double bed was actually two single beds put together. The neighbourhood is also a bit strange- at the time not much else was open. Staff were very kind and helpful.

This was my third stay with the property, and definetly my last. On arrival the check in was nothing special, however my early arrival was accommodated. The room was not cleaned to the previous standard, with spots on the wall, and a previous guest lost clothing still in the room. I ask for the bed to be converted to a double just after my check in at about half past one. Housekeeping was tardy with the request and only arrived at about 5 when they did turndown. This is unpleasant because I was told they will come and convert the beds immediately. The restaurant was closed, due to a wedding, and we were told we can order room service. Our room service order was forgotten about and I had to phone twice to ask for my food. Check out was unfriendly and the receptionist had poor communication skills. In total a very poor experience. This hotel is a shadow of what it can potentially be. I will never go back.

I spent two nights in the Docklands as part of a business trip of 20 people. The industrial charme of this place in the port of Durban works better during daytime than at night, when the neigbourhood is completely deserted. If you are into jogging, this is a great place to start a run up the Durban beach, which is a few minutes away. As early as 07h30 it swarms with walkers, surfers, runners and school kids.

The interior of the hotel takes up the industrial theme of the surroundings and is built around a pleasant courtyard. Rooms are functional and clean (one colleague complained about a dirty shower). The breakfast buffet offers decent choice (no juice though). All our key cards stopped working on the second night and needed to be reconfigured.

On one evening, we organised a set-menu dinner in the hotel. Providing basic service to a table of 20 guests turned out to be a near unsurmountable challenge for the Docklands staff. Management later apologised but the hotel can not at all be recommended for hosting a function of this type and size.

On the day of check-out I had a cleaner knocking on my door at 09h00, asking in blunt tone for a precise time when I would leave.

Three points, because I had a very good deal on the room. Otherwise I would have rated the Docklands lower.

This is the 2nd time I have stayed at Docklands, it is positioned right opposite the Durban harbour. It is really great to watch a working dock in action. The hotel has friendly staff and spacious rooms. The fittings are quiet retro, and I like. This is a different from the norm, it puzzles me why people pay R300 more per night at an old and tired City Lodge.

Room Tip: Ask for a harbour facing room, remember it is a working harbour and can be heard 24/7

Very nice inner city hotel close to tourist spots on Durban beachfront. Wodka restaurant really good for dinne and breakfast. Rooms clean and comfortable. Would definitely recomend and would stay here again.

Room Tip: Try to book a room with balcony overlookng the harbour. Interesting view.
