The Golden Mile has been an attraction for South Africans for decades. Kilometres of golden beaches and promenades have now been improved and upgraded in time for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. If you find yourself in sunny Durban, don't miss this.
I went for a run through the new upgrade which boasts restaurants and bars every couple of hundred metres in 'beachfront nodes'. Natural vegetation has been preserved, and the area is shining with gorgeous sunlight and happy faces. I felt as if I had been transferred to Miami Beach, only it was better. People were smiling, lifeguards greeted me and kids played on the beach in the warm wintery sun. I couldn't help smiling at the police laughing with a tourist giving her directions to the stadium. To give credence to my experience, Universal Studios were filming a movie on one of the piers, whilst surfers waited for the next wave below.
The entire area is magical, and this isn't Disney magic. It's tangible joy that only South Africa can provide.
