Can you say "home away from home"? Lovely, quiet, friendly and full of good vibes, married South African/British owners Wayne and Stacey were not only my hosts but became good friends. I've returned several times since my initial visit, always feeling like a welcome member of the family (which includes a disabled rescued parrot!) Always just a phone call away when I got lost driving around Durban, Wayne and Stacey invited me to dinner, parties and weekends out, introduced me to their friends and made me feel safe so far from home. The rooms were comfortable with ample closet space, the cleaning staff was affable and helpful, the pool was a bonus, and the location was perfect -- just across the street from the famed Botanical Gardens. A highly recommended cost-effective place to stay in Durban if you are not looking for sterile and impersonal hotels or crazy, noisy backpackers!

Room Tip: perhaps avoid the room by the kitchen if you want to sleep in.

We stayed there for two nights and our rooms were NEVER once cleaned. The owners were not even aware that the rooms had not been cleaned meaning that they did not at any point inspect the rooms. We even had to ask for fresh towels the following morning because no attention was paid to the service. The owners of the place were no were to be found on the one day, the lady had gone out to a wedding and we the guests were left with no one to offer us any service apart from the lady who prepare the breakfast and left immediately afterwards, before checkout time. The food on the first morning was average. Upon arrival we were told that breakfast will not be served later than 9am, on the second morning breakfast was served at 11am. We had to wait for the owner, who very rudely asked us what we wanted for breakfast, to prepare the breakfast for us. When we were cheking out on the second day and we confronted her about the fact that we were not satisfied with the service, she got defensive. She then went on to blame us, her guests who were paying a whopping R690 per room per night, for the rooms not having been cleaned. Also please note that the pictures on their website are a totally inaccurate representation of the place. We got there and the rooms were dim and not as bright and airy as in the pictures, the furniture was old and worn out and the decor had a creepy feel to it. The rooms did not have small bath cloths nor did they have soap as is represented on the pictures.

In response to this review:

This group of seven young ladies were booked from Friday night to Sunday morning. They were attending a function on the Saturday afternoon. They spent the entire Saturday morning occupying their rooms preparing themselves for their function therefore not allowing the opportunity for their rooms to be serviced. The staff left at 11h30 and not immediately after breakfast as the guest claims. Their rooms were therefore not serviced on the Saturday and they checked out on the Sunday morning. They were issued with fresh towels upon request.
These ladies also arrived at 03h15 in the morning (Saturday) without any advise/ phone call to explain their delay.
They were given their invoice on the Saturday morning. On the Sunday morning when it came to settling their bill, they were of the opinion that they were due a reduction as they had not spent the whole of Friday night at the guest house and their rooms had not been serviced on the Saturday morning.

The photos on our website is of our guest house and is exactly what one sees when they arrive. Perhaps these ladies thought it was dark and dim because they arrived at 03h15 in the morning. Our décor is afro-colonial and not urban chic. Our "old and worn" furniture is in fact antiques. Our previous guests have commented that the pictures on our sites do not do our guest house justice and that it is even better when they arrive.

I booked three rooms in the guesthouse to attend the Durban July. They only had ONE maid to work on the weekend for four hours to serve 9 people, so obviosuly the breakfats was late and our rooms were not cleaned. The lady complained that she oveerslept because we came in late from the July party and our rooms were not cleaned because we were in until 1pm, but the maid had already left before 11am cause she only works 4hrs.
When we left there was a screaming match between us and the hosts, not a way to manage a B&B if you are in the hospitality business, your clients are always right, you try to accomodate them or you tell them you cannot accomodate them. The place does not deserve a 3 star rating.

Nice stay for my 3 nights but the WIFI as promised and advertised does not exist and the parking is not enough for 3 vehicles.

Room Tip: Not for stay when on business due to lack of wifi and parking accessibility.

Thank you for your review. We do offer free Wi-Fi and it does exist and it has been up and running for approximately seven years. Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused in that you were unable to log on to the wireless network.. This happened in our absence and we assure you that we would have done everything to assist you had we been present.

We do listen to what our guests have to say and we are currently in the process of upgrading the network to provide a faster connection and a stronger signal for all rooms on the property.

Centrally located next to Botanic Gardens and 3 minute walk to Durban University of Technology. Neighbourhood not the best so one must be careful at all times. Stacy and Wayne were away; however, Lily cooked fantastic breakfasts and was very helpful with advice. Also, very accommodating with guests and laundry. B&B an older house. Felt very welcome and comfortable. Cons: little parking in front if you have a car; Internet key not available in guest book in room but must be obtained from Lily (many guests came in the evening and were looking for the key but no one around to supply it); and Internet does not reach the front rooms (must go to dining room - noisy for other guests if you need to collaborate). Need a more powerful wireless router and key in welcome pad of each room. Internet a bit slow plus plugs in for laptop near desk not plentiful - a bit of a problem if there on business. But overall a nice place and well worth the stay.

Thank you for your review. You have brought to our attention a couple of issues that came to light due to our being away. We are now in the process of upgrading the router and connections to the front rooms so that all guests can enjoy a strong internet connection in the comfort of their own rooms. The passwords for the wireless connection is now available in the information booklets.
We are pleased that you otherwise had a comfortable and pleasant stay and hope you return one day in the future.

The rooms were serviced every day by Lily. The breakfast was fantastic, all you could want for and more. The pool was crystal clear and checked daily. Wayne and Stacey who own it were extremely friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Picked up and taken to the airport. Use of Wayne's car. Taken for guided trips with them to see places that a tourist would find hard to see. We arrived there as guests and left there as friends. We enjoyed it so much that we have returned several times, only to find that same great hospitality. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: All rooms are of excellent quality

We were in Durban in september 2010. We didn’t want to make the typical touristic south africa trip, so we decided to organise our trip by ourselves.
By accident, we found that beautiful place called „Botany Bay“. The first time we entered, we could see that the owners have an exquisite taste in furnishing and decorating. Everything seemed so unique. Later we found out that the owner was travelling quite a lot around Africa. All the little decorations, like masks and so on, he brought from this trips and placed it in the B&B.
Botany Bay is very clean and neat. From the bathroom to the kitchen. We couldn’t find anything regarding cleanliness that was disturbing, quite the opposite.
We were very happy to have the possibility to use the kitchen to cook ourselves dinner in the evening. The kitchen is well equipped.
The owners were very helpful. Whenever we needed help, they were very open and kind. But we also appreciated that we had our privacy and weren’t disturbed at all during our stay.
Every single room is very nicely furnished and unique.
In the evenings it was beautiful to sit outside by the pool and just enjoy the night.
Botany Bay is close to the Musgrave Centre. Musgrave Centre is a popular shopping mall, with lots of restaurants, bars, shops and a cinema.
Just opposite the street of Botany Bay there are the Botanical Gardens. A must-go.
All in all we were very satisfied with Botany Bay. It is a great accomodation for everyone who likes it a little unique, cosy and personally. Look at the pics, so that you know what we mean.
