African Peninsula Guest House
Ranked #126 of 255 Durban B&B and Inns

Situated in an upmarket residential area with fabulous views over the Indian Ocean, this guest house really has it all. One of the biggest advantages being the onsite restaurant offering great meals for lunch and dinner at exceptionally good prices. My colleague and I had rooms 3 and 4, both of which were well furnished and spacious. Room 3 had a huge deck, Room4 the bonus of a seating area in the room but a smaller deck. The views from both were excellent.

The guest house is spread out over a few levels with small swimming pools accessed by different rooms. The main dining area has both an indoor and outdoor seating area. Dragging yourself away from the sun rising over the ocean whilst at breakfast was something of an effort!

The staff are friendly and efficient at every level from the waitresses to the gardeners.

A thoroughly enjoyable stay and highly recommended.

From the minute we booked to the moment we (sadly) had to leave, the helpfulness, hospitality, charm and courtesy remained the key to our wonderful stay at the African Peninsula. The room (No 3) has a remarkable view of the beautiful Indian Ocean where every morning we awoke to the lapping of the waves on the shore directly beneath us; the whales at play from first light.
Breakfast starts the day off with a smile (the staff surpass all expectations) which stays with you all day. Whether you take lunch or dinner, the menu, if limited, offers a good choice all cooked superbly by a very talented chef using very fresh ingredients, again topped by excellent waitress service, always polite and very helpful.
The room is large, very comfortable and has all the amenities you would expect with a functional bathroom (both shower and bath). But what makes room 3 the best is the view from its covered balcony (ideal for the odd day it rains) of the ocean.
Harry (the owner) is the most charming and generally helpful host you could wish for, along with Cheryl, Wesley and Clare make sure you have everything you desire. Thank you all for making us feel so at home. We were in need of a driver which was absolutely no trouble at all to arrange and well worth a mention here too. Alan you did us proud-thank you.
The guest house (more akin to a boutique hotel) has fantastically kept gardens, two pools and charming little hideaways where you can relax and enjoy the tranquility. An establishment well worth visiting.

Room Tip: Room 3 has the best view of them all - If its available - Book it

On arrival, we were checked in by Harry who makes you feel at home right away. The room we stayed in (no. 6) was spacious, with 2 separate bedrooms, a kitchenette, bathroom with a separate bath and shower and the most stunning view from a decking balcony / seating area which overlooks the Indian Ocean. Each morning you can hear the waves crashing onto the beach below. The restaurant here is pleasant and you can eat your breakfast overlooking the ocean in peace and quiet and the wait staff are very friendly. Overall a wonderful stay, I wish we had been there longer!

Beautiful settings, some rooms need a refresher, but otherwise a great place, and a great restaurant on-site with talented young chef's preparing tasteful food. As a long term user (most weekdays of 2010) I got to stay in most rooms, and all of them are charming, and of different sizes and decor. Overall a pleasant stay away from home.

Room Tip: Try and get te sea-facing rooms, but if not the garden facing rooms are just as tranquil

My husband and I unfortunately only got to stay here for 1 night before catching a plane out of the Durban area. The rooms all face the Indian Ocean, which is right down in front of you which is just gorgeous and it's tranquil and peaceful .The room was very nice, modern and quite large, with all the mod-cons, such as A/C, etc. You would definitely need a car if you wanted to go out and sight-see or whatever, as it's quite isolated, and not near to any sights or shopping or restaurants (although there is a good restaurant within the guesthouse). The only problem we had was that we were out on the patio having a drink and relaxing and noticed we'd left the patio door open. As we had the air-conditioner on in the room to cool it down a bit, we shut the patio door as it shouldn't be left open when the A/C's on. As 2 monkeys came by on our railing, my husband wanted to go back in and get the camera. Well, the patio door was locked and no way was it going to budge. After yelling hello and help, we realized there wasn't another soul around. I think we were the only quests there at the time. Our only saving grace was that the restaurant was just down below us, so we sat back down & waited for an hour for the restaurant to open and then yelled down and an employee there came up and unlocked the door for us. It was all pretty funny after, but we could have been in a real predicament if we were nowhere near the restaurant and no one could hear us. Management said they would look after the problem with the door lock, so we certainly hope they have as it's a really lovely room. We also had a really delicious dinner in their restaurant, but we have never been in any restaurant anywhere (and there were only 2 other people there) where the service was so painfully slow. It was so unbelievably long it was amazing as to why. Besides the slow dinner service and door lock incident, which hopefully are looked after, if you have a car, this place is truly beautiful and certainly recommended.

We found the Peninsula Guest House to be home away from home. The plus being that it is ocean facing with wonderful views and in a very tranquil setting. Even though we had rain during most of our stay, a wonderful time was had by all and we plan on returning!!! Soon!

We are currently staying at The African Peninsula. Beautifully and functionally decorated room with spacious, tastefully outfitted bathroom. Everything works well and the surrounding garden is lovely, contains two pools. The view from almost anywhere is fantastic. The Indian Ocean crashes beneath you, and the gorgous beach invites you to bathe, run or fish.
The Peninsula features a nutritious and delicious breakfast, but you might as well try their lunches or dinners as well. Locals come for dinner, and you can see why: tasteful restaurant, excellent menu, well prepared food at decent prices.

The family who runs this establishment and their employees are very helpful.
The son acted as our cab driver and took us into town one day. He later phoned to be sure we had secured a ride back. This helped greatly to mitigate the one downside to this lovely guesthouse: it's a long way from town. But if you have a car, that's not a problem. The neighborhood is a gorgeous alternative to the bustling an noisy downtown area.
