“Paradise by the Indian Ocean”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2013

We stayed 4 nights at 305 on Ipahla and had such a wonderful, relaxing time. The location, service, amenities, staff etc are second to none and I cannot recommend highly enough a stay here.

The hotel is within easy distance of the airport and a transfer service was provided which made this very easy. Also within easy reach of Durban. On arrival the first thing that strikes you apart from the friendliness of the staff, is that you can see from the front door, right through the hotel and the lovely gardens, to the Indian Ocean. The location of this hotel is in such a beautiful setting, you'll be inclined to spend all your time here, despite having a wealth of things to do right on the doorstep.

Our room was ocean facing, which as the name suggests has a balcony with seats that provide magnificent views of the Indian Ocean. There is floor to ceiling sliding glass doors between the room and the balcony that when opened make the living space vast. I got up early the first morning and was rewarded with one of the most beautiful sunrises I'd ever seen.

The room was very spacious with a huge bed, tea and coffee facilities, safe, fridge, mini bar and its own lounge area, which was great for having snacks etc. The bathroom had a great rain shower as well as a jacuzzi bath, a good stock of complimentary items and was immaculate as was the rest of the hotel. There is a good flat screen TV but with views like that, I doubt you'll ever use it.

The dining/breakfast area is lovely, again with floor to ceiling glass sliding doors that are opened the majority of the time, allowing you to daydream with views of the gardens and ocean while you eat. Breakfast had an extensive range of hot and cold food on offer, as well as fruits and cereals. I can highly recommend 'The Dutchy' which I'd never tried before. We had breakfast every day as well as two evening meals which were as good, if not better, as eating in a very nice restaurant.

The gardens are very big, with a pool and lead down onto an extensive decking area with hammocks, tables and chairs. I spent a lot of time here as the views are stunning. I'd say you can see about 5km of unspoilt beach front from this area and on several occasions I saw pods of up to ten Dolphins swimming, usually at dusk and dawn. I know from speaking to the owner Ian (lovely, helpful guy with a wealth of knowledge and stories) that you can often see whales passing by, particularly during the sardine run.

There is also a pool, gym and conference facilities within the hotel, if you can drag yourself away from the great views.

The staff were all just great and made you feel so welcome that you didn't want to leave. Ian, as already mentioned helped us loads with where to go and what to do. We went on the most amazing one day safari to Tala Reserve where we saw Rhino, Zebra, Giraffe, Water Buffalo, Hippo, Springbok and much more. It's also within easy reach of snorkelling, diving and less energetic activities such as shopping.

Stephanie, the Manageress, is just fantastic. So helpful and always there, nothing is too much trouble, very professional yet gives the hotel a great feel good factor. Julie was very kind and helpful to us also and it was great to get to know them both. Thank you!

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at 305 on Ipahla and would love to go back some time. Whether it's for business or pleasure, you will not be disappointed at your stay here.

Room Tip: Ocean facing room.

We had a lovely, comfortable room with a great sea view. We enjoyed the fact that the room had separate sleeping and seating area with an honesty bar. The room had air-conditioning and a ceiling fan. The bathroom was a bit tired and could do with a bit of a refresh especially to renew the sealant and grout around the shower and bath area. Breakfast was lovely but the first day we had a late breakfast and the fresh selection was finished with no more being offered to us.
Outside areas are great for BBQ and sitting in the sun in hammocks watching the sea.

We had an amazing stay at 305 on Ipahla. Great location, overlooking the ocean, very big garden and wooden deck to chill outside. The rooms are spacious, very well equipped and comfortable (we had a luxury seaview room); the same can be said for the bathroom: delightful spa bath, nice shower, 2 sinks and there's still a lot of space to move around.
Breakfasts are quite good and in very sufficient quantity.
On top of that, Stephanie the manageress was extremely kind and helpful with all the guests that were there.
305 on Ipahla is a great guesthouse to relax and get away from the city buzz. We'll definitely come back.

overlooking the Indian Oceon, seating in hammocks and on granite benches in peaceful tranquility. gazing at Amanzitotis friendly town i felt i was in paradise. The very attentive Manager, Stephanie and Boss and staff were always near for doubts i had about transport, outings, shopping at the nearby Galleria, also providing the correct power adaptor.
ample breakfast, and advance few hours notice for the numerous evening meals served on the Terrace. loved the room with refridgerater, & constant coffee/tea facility. luxury rooms with settee, soft colours, ample cushions,African artifacts in all areas. small swim pool and lovely lighting everywhere. Intimate 20 room hotel which i'd loved to live in. 20minute drive to Durban city. superb everything.

Room Tip: sea facing rooms if possible

I would just like to inform you that I was totally disappointed with this establishment.
My husband and I stayed there in the supposed ‘honeymoon suite’.
On our arrival we were informed that the aircon was not working and that it would only be fixed the next day. No suggestion of a discount or anything for this inconvenience in the blazing 30 degree temperature we had to endure.
In the Bar Fridge there was only beers and one cider. Surely the fridge could have been checked to ensure a variety considering it was advertised to us as a honeymoon suite which implies that Men and Women would be accommodated. Beers are generally not a ladies drink. Even the next day the drinks were not replenished that we drank. On the 3rd day the drinks were replenished however, they were taken out the fridge (obviously to do a stock take) and left there, so they were warm and we could not drink any even though we were still paying for that night??
There was no soap, bubble bath, cream or any such complimentary toiletries that you would expect to find in a B&B that you paying over R 900 a night for.
Single ply toilet paper. We don’t even use single ply at home.
On the second and third day we were not provided with bath mats for the bathroom.
There was only one coat hanger in the cupboard and we had to go and ask for more, which was not too much of an issue, but this really should have been checked before we occupied the room.
Breakfast was a disaster. We did stipulate dietary requirements (Vegetarians) on our arrival, which was obviously just ignored. The first day we ended up not even eating breakfast as we were given raw tomatoes on toast. The second day we had about 5 sliced up mushrooms on toast. Surely you could have been a lot more generous with the mushrooms considering the first day we had to go without breakfast.
There was no WiFi, even though it was advertised.
There was no hairdryer in the room even though it was advertised.
The sheet on the bed was too small for the bed. We basically slept on the mattress for all three nights.
There was e drawing marks on the tiles in the bathroom obviously from the building that had just taken place. You did not even bother to wipe this off before we occupied the room.
We were keep on receiving other people’s clothing on our bed each day we got home. This happened twice to us.

I am sorry, but this was totally unacceptable and I would like answers as to why we were not discounted after we did complain, upon checkout. Not even an apology letter later on, absolutely nothing. The manageress kept on asking us if the breakfast was okay the next morning and apologising for the previous morning’s breakfast, even though we did complain about all the other stuff??? It was just as if it was forgotten about. She also kept on telling us that she was there to ensure our comfort, but obviously these were really just words. No action was taken. Exceptionally poor management I must say.

Obviously this is acceptable to you to allow people to pay almost R 1000 a night for this type of service and lack of basic amenities for an establishment of your so called calibre. Not providing soap on all 3 nights even though we informed the manageress is just ridiculous!!!!

It is very sad that you think this is acceptable to not give people value for money.

I have sent 3 emails of complaint and not one reply....

So often, we complain about our bad experiences...how often do we say thank you? Stephanie, you are a superb hostess and your lodge is extraordinary. I like to spoil my wife every so often and I think she felt what I intended. Thank you to you and 305 on Ipahla. We will definitely be back and will also tell our friends!

Room Tip: Awesome place!!!

During our holiday trip in South Africa in October we stayed one night in Durban, I booked this guesthouse as i had the opportunity to stay one night during there during abusiness trip in July 2011. we booked one luxury room with sea view and where not disappointed. the room is very spacious with a big lounge area, great bathroom with spa bath, nice private terrace with 2 chairs (but no table). Before having breakfast we watch dolphins playing in the Indian ocean just in front of the guesthouse, is there a better way to start your day ? the breakfast was very good, everything was clean and they have a nice pool (but very close to the breakfast room) and a very big garden, I can only recommend this place!

Room Tip: make an upgrade and choose a luxury room with sea view, you will not regret it !
