My wife grew up on a farm overlooking the Gorge and Reserve. We, together with our children and now grandchildren, have spent countless holidays in the area and it never ceases to impress. We have just spent another wonderful weekend there during which our youngest son, proposed to the love of his life in the Nature Reserve, next to a waterfall, so I'm sure he & his wife to be will cherish this spot for the rest of their lives. There is much wild life to be found in the reserve - monkeys, baboons, bushbuck, oribi, various birds of prey, dassies - the list is endless.

To be fair, Eskom cut power to this area for the day. Apperently, also to the gentleman manning the curio shop. It required significant effort to solicit any kind of response from him and one will be forgiven for thinking that life owed him an apology.

To be fair, the gentleman stationed at the adventure station, was rather informative - almost educational about the area. He, along with the waitress serving coffee from a gas fired stove made up for any general power failure in the area.

If you are heading out that way for any of the adventure offerings on offer, elect beforehand to persevere through interim roadworks and, of course, the elderly getleman at the curio shop .

Located 45 minutes inland from Port Shepstone, Oribi Gorge is a very scenic natural reserve with an abundance of lovely views, especially from the various viewpoints along the 9km roundtrip Mziki hiking path.

There are also a number of other shorter hiking trails and a few picnic spots from which to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. The list of animals, birds, reptiles and trees present in the reserve is extensive, although we didn't spot too many (thankfully, as leopards are said to reside here!) on our hike.

The reserve can be visited for the day or overnight. There are cabins with self-catering facilities available at the lodge. A modest entry fee of R20 per person is payable at the lodge.

Although the road to the gorge is of poor quality in some stretches, the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve is definitely worth a visit.

A majestic surprise 30 minutes from Margate! We took the hoop-hoop trail that crawls along the river. Some parts can be a bit challenging climbing up rocks so hiking poles is definitely recommended.
