Owner description: The Midlands Meander in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal, is a collection of arranged routes that offer visitors hospitality in truly beautiful surroundings, outstanding accommodation, conference and wedding facilities, fascinating local events, fabulous cuisine and restaurants, revitalising outdoor activities and over-the-top adventure sports, historic landmarks, wildlife conservation, and best of all "shop-till-you-drop" unique arts and crafts. An easy one-hour drive from Durban and four and a half hours on the N3 highway from Johannesburg, there is much to explore and do in the Midlands.

Those who visited Midlands Meander previously will be disappointed. Lots of quaint shops/outlets selling unusual items have either closed down or are selling the usual chinese junk available at all other local stores. Still a few antique shops left.Mostly eating places with really much to offer. Roads havent improved, pot holed so if anyone making a trip out should drive slowly & cautiously. If you are a camping junkee then its still ok for the peace & quiet.

Hello!

Thanks for your input and feedback. It sounds like you would be interested in visiting our "Butterfly Crafters" - those establishments where 80% of the product is made within the bounds of the Midlands Meander. There is a whole page dedicated to these crafters in the new Midlands Meander Guide. Please email info@midlandsmeander.co.za if you would like to have a copy posted to you.

We have been spending time in the Midlands Meander. It is really nice but sometimes the map/info brocure is out of date. Generally very good but there are shops which import their wares from elsewhere and pass it off as locally produced.

Hello Stephanus,

Thank your for your input and feedback - this is always appreciated.

The latest Guide should always be available along the routes (we urge our members to always stock the latest Guide). Please email info@midlandsmeander.co.za if you would like to be posted a copy of the latest A3 publication. In this email, perhaps you can also let us know which shops were passing off imports as local goods? Maybe we can help set the record straight.

Art, Leather work, Craft, Food,Wine, Scenery - its got it all. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit along route 2 and 3 of the meander. Midmar dam is on the route but we had run out of cash for the entry fee. Abington Winery was closed the day we were there as well - sorely disappointed. Howick falls are spectacular and worth the visit as are Karkloof falls.

An approximately 50 km section between Mooi River and Hilton along various secondary roads, this is one of my favourite spaces. The Meander consists of a host of speciality shops with an emphasis on the handcrafted or on-site manufacture; adventure and other activities; sundry accommodation and food-and-drink options; all located in gentle, verdant KZN countryside. Over the years I have narrowed down my meandering to a few well-loved outlets: Groundcover at Curry's Post for footwear, handbags and the loveliest setting; the Lavender Co at Dargle for all sorts of lavender-based products and another glorious setting; Howick Falls (most accessible waterfall in the country?); Mzansi-Zulu Quilt Centre in the row of little shops up the road from the Falls; Glass Cuttings in Hilton for feast-your-eyes stained glass and pretty, glass-fired bead jewellery; the Rontunda at Hilton to stock up on locally-produced food for self-catering. I've enjoyed overnight stays at Old Halliwell and Fern Hill (both have very nice restaurants as well), and meals at Yellowood Cafe and the outlying Picklepot Cafe. I may one day pop in to the tourist facility that I believe is being developed at the place along the R103 where Nelson Mandela was arrested in 1962. My own "meandering" therefore caters to my personal interests in scenery and crafts, but there is so much more. Also note that the Midlands Meander is a members-only commercial undertaking: there are quite a lot of other outlets along the Meander route that are not necessarily Meander members: the excellent Grapevine (home industry - food store), and Mushka (clothing and accessories) in Howick both come to mind and are favourites of mine.
