We stayed at thendele camp in the drakensburg. The cottage was huge and well equipped. The views were absolutely superb. The peace and quiet a welcome change from se England . The absence of ambient light made the night sky a huge planetarium and wonderful to see so many stars.
Plenty of walks to do there although quite a way to drive to get there in the first instance. Well worth it though

If you can do anything in South Africa go up Sani Pass. Its a torturtous drive but the views are breathtaking. All the way to the top you will see the bravehearts hiking, biking and walking.
On my first trip to Sani Pass at certain viewpoints you seem to merge and float with the clouds and it reminded me of the poem the"daffodil"..I wander lonely as a cloud....
There are numerous waterfalls cascading down the mountainside..cool, clear, clean water. If you are daring enough you can splash around in the water.
Do visit the pub(highest pub in Africa) for maybe a hot cuppa after the long drive which may take 2- 2 and half hours. In fact you would need a whole day to do the trip to Sani Pass.
Dont forget to carry passports as you will cross the Lesoto border and hey its gets really chilly up there-so a thick jacket will do.

Spectacular mountain range (1000km long), loads of places to stop and stay for all budgets; famous for its bushman paintings. Great hikes for a variety of fitness levels.

I am focussing on the Drakensburg section based in KZN.

Tips: The most beautiful spots are to be found within the Ezemvelo KZN wildlife resorts (government owned), the accomodation in these places is generally OK but its not 5 star!

Summer: you may have difficulty seeing the mountains as they tend to get covered in cloud early in the day. Spectacular thunderstorms then follow in the afternoon.

And yes, as mentioned before, lots of potholes on the roads!

Looking to enjoy kms of scenic drives ,Drakensburg route offers peace & tranquility whilst enjoying the natural beauty & surrounds of the berg. Once again drivers take heed roads have numerous potholes, some places very narrow so drive with caution.

Fabulous weekend of hiking in the Drakensberg with Darren and Jonathan from Soul Adventures. Darren has the gift to convince you to carry on when you feel like giving up and turning around.
