Owner description: The 1976 photograph of slain thirteen-year old Hector Pieterson, carried by a friend while his grieving sister runs alongside, is a chilling reminder that South African was changed thereafter.

This open square in Soweto depicts through photos, architecture, and flowing water the horror of the Soweto Uprising. A huge permanent photo depicts Hector Pieterson, one of the first school kids shot by police, his body being carried while his sister wails. You couldn't miss this significance, even if you tried.

Being English, until you come here and read and feel what happened, you don't really understand what happened, its an amazing place, and sent shivers down my spine, if you go to SA, this is a must see place

well-placed, but the downside is we were there in June, same time as Youth Day in SA, and the memorial was overrun with unruly school children, otherwise, well worth the visit

Looks like one needs to go back after mentally ingesting a first visit. Things that happened there just seem to have gone by so quickly at first, but come to think about it, one feels the necessity of some sort of immersion in that reality.

Just to sit here at the memorial and take it all in is a breathtaking experience. Looking down the hill towards the cooler towers back towards madibas house just trying to picture what the streets were like on this day is truly moving. The history and meaning of this area cannot be understated.
