Don't miss this. Top thing to do in J burg. It's a little pricey which made me hesitant but I had a wonderful time. So much history and still history in the making.

Did the 4 hour tour. Right timing I think. An amazing way to see Soweto! Felt very safe! Carried my brand new DSLR camera and didn't fear for pick-pockets etc. A face to face with the local people. A beautiful opportunity for pictures of the children and other who come out to greet you... A great history lesson from the people on the ground, unbias and straight to the point. No hard sells at markets or stores. Just good honest touring of the township. Move through a couple of the different 'suburbs' within the township, all with their own unique piece of history. Finish with a visit to an African Jazz family home and have a beer and a dance for R15 (AUD 2.50). Great guides, and a great experience.

We did the half day tour, which was a gave us a good overview of Soweto and its rich history. We visited the workers hostel, site of the 1976 Soweto Uprising, Hector Petersen memorial and Nelson Mandela's former home ending off with lunch and a visit to a local shebeen (informal bar). The tour was professionally run with a knowledgeable and experienced guide who gave us interesting information about Soweto. The pace of the tour was manageable (for someone who isn't particularly fit) with many stops. The guide also paid attention to safety, and no one was left behind the group. There was a wide selection of bicycles available including a tandem.

I highly recommend this tour for people who want to see the real Soweto and get a sense of the community. The local community seemed happy that tourists were taking the time to discover their neighbourhood, and not just pass through in a tourbus. I was also impressed with the backpackers from which the tour was run, which has a very chilled out vibe perfect for a cold post tour beer.
