“A great experience to have lunch in Soweto!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2012 via mobile

Food is ok, a large buffet, but the experience to sit elbow to elbow with the locals is unforgettable! Not easy to find, must go with someone who has been there before. Even if you don't stay in Jo'burg but you have 4-5 hours between your flights it's a good idea to take the short trip to Soweto and Wandie's and pay a visit to Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu homes after or before the Apartheid museum.

“traditional fare”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 18, 2012

Our thanks to the staff and customers at Wandies who accepted our very short time frame for a lunch time bite. We had intended coffee only and their generosity enabled a much needed plate full of delicious traditional food to be consumed in the second restaurant area. We even got to walk through the kitchen and can verify as to its professionalism and cleanliness

“A true Sowetan (tourist) place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2010

Wandies is one of the main stopping points on the tourist trail in Soweto, the "South West Township" next to Johannesburg. Located in the suburb of Dube, it's the only restaurant in a small side street. If you manage to find the place (Google Maps does not even get you close, but a good GPS SatNav should), enough secure parking in a private parking opposite is available.

The restaurant is divided in two halves, the old one with the main kitchen and a bar has walls plastered with business cards from previous international visitors (locals rarely come here), and the new one which is a bit more modern. The atmosphere is friendly and you can be almost sure that the owner will come through and ask if you are happy.

Wandies has played host to celebrities like Richard Branson, the CEO of Virgin Airlines, Evander Holyfield, Jesse Jackson, Quincy Jones and the All Blacks.

Food is from a standard buffet, no individual orders taken, but you get a selection of typical township dishes of good quality and sufficient quantities.

It can get crowded if busloads of tour guests overrun the place, but it gives you the best township feeling if you don't dare to go to the real places where the locals go (which is certainly wirth it, but to to time and security concerns that's not for everyone).
