I am being a little unfair with that headline - there is some very good and some perfectly acceptable service to be found in this city. But while I am a regular at San bar, it is a classic example of that all too common Joburg feature, an upmarket location with good food spoilt by poor service. It has a great feeling both indoors in the 1970's hotel lobby redecorated in a really chic and comfy modern way, and the very up to date urban view outdoor roof terrace section. The food is good for "smart casual" dining, and the menu quite varied and generally served quickly - an ideal lunch venue. The service is unfailingly friendly but hopelessly disorganised. Waiters come and go, rarely the same one serving you throughout a meal. Items get forgotten and you need to chase for them. And mostly they mill about, chatting amongst themselves or fiddling with table settings, while the customers already seated at tables are ignored. I simply don't see why you can't train waitstaff to keep their eyes open for the tables they serve, to check in after the meal is served if everything is ok, and most of all when they bring the bill to a table to come back promptly to collect payment ! 5* for setting, 4* for food, 2* for service (and it would be 1* if not for the smiles even when they mess up).
