“Wonderful Grand Hotel”
Reviewed October 16, 2009

During our recent vacation to South Africa we stayed ay this wonderful hotel for an overnight stay on two separate occassions. The rooms were large, bright and clean and most importantly ready to check-in after our overseas flight.. Large updated bathrooms with a wonderful walk-in shower and separate tub.

The hotel staff was very efficient and friendly. Any requst was handled immediately and with a smile. We were able to leave one of our un-needed suitcases with the hotel between our stay.

On our return stay there was a complimentary fruit basket and bottle of wine in our room!

Breakfast which was included in our room rate was excellent.

My only regret is that we did not have dinner at the hotel. We ate in the restaurants in Mandella Square and although they were good, I think the meal would have been better because we had a late night dessert at the hotel and it was fabulous! It was the best single dish of my entire South African vacation.

The rooms are old but this hotel has the best location in Sandton. Its pricey and bit pretentious, but service is on par with other hotels in the area. I wouldn't recommend the restaurant though, there is too many great restaurants in the area!

Good afternoon NanaG:

Firstly, thank you for the constructive criticism, this allows us to consistantly improve on our service and facilities.

On that note, I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that we are currently undergoing a refurbishment. We have already completed 50% of our rooms, and should have the final rooms done by the end of December.
The new rooms are still in line with the "Italian Renaissance" look and feel but promise more luxury and comfort.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to give us this feedback. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Yours Sincerely

The Michelangelo is described as one of the foremost luxury hotels in the Sandton area of Johannesburg. It enjoys a good location off Nelson Mandela Square with good and easy access to all the shopping malls, bars and restaurants and appears most suited to the business/professional traveller, rather than those looking for family accommodation or a more personal level of service.
Check in and departure was handled efficiently and without problems.
My room was comfortable, modern and well-serviced throughout my stay - three nights. Fortunately, I was in a corridor away from the admittedly impressive five- or six-storey open atrium where friends, nearer to the elevators, found the noise from the ground floor bar area disruptive and annoying, lasting late into the morning, around 3 am.
Breakfast on the Friday was excellent, including a self-service selection of juices, croissants & bread/toast etc, fresh fruit and cereals, plus a freshly prepared to order full south-african cooked breakfast.
Sadly, this was not the case over the weekend where the cooked breakfast was serve-yourself from tepid baine-Maries onto even colder plates. The quality was poor and bland, the quantity and speed of re-supply erratic and the lack of interest from supervisory staff falling far short of the standard to be expected from a seemingly five-star hotel.
On returning to the hotel from dinner with friends, the service at the bar on the Saturday evening was poor to appalling. I suppose that finding seats for about a dozen people should perhaps have been a hint of what was to follow.
I think that the hotel expects and prefers the bar to operate largely as waiter-service but bar staff were distracted by many guests/visitors buying their own drinks. Having forgotten to bring one drink - a bottle of beer - we reminded our waiter on three occasions that the order remained unfulfuilled, despite having been paid for. This was inexcusable as there were plenty of service staff plus various managers, although most of these at one point were reduced to clearing up empty glasses and rubbish from tables.
When brought to the attention of the bar manager, he claimed that they had been very busy - they were not, or if that was his perception of "busy", the hotel needs to review its processes quickly, before the Football World Cup comes to town next year.
Having since brought these deficiencies to the attention of the hotel's more senior management, a satisfactory response has not been provided, despite a detailed report being submitted to them over four weeks ago.
I, for one - and my friends, for others - shall not return; nor would I recommend this hotel to others with reasonable expectations of a decent stay in an expensive hotel.

This property which WAS a GREAT HOTEL at one time is READY for a TOTAL OVERHAUL....
Staff requires more training, Service is BAD, Property is OKAY, needs urgent re-furbishment, The internet vouchers need to be collected from the lobby desk without which you can't connect, Food is OKAY.. Just a AVERAGE HOTEL.. Surely not the worth the price we paid...
Advantages - LOCATION. Well located @ SANDTON near the Shopping Malls

We had some reservations about staying at the Michelangelo based on Trip Advisor reviews. We ended up staying here because it was the only major hotel in Johannesburg which would guarantee us two interconnecting rooms for our family.

The hotel has a great location for the first time visitor. It is part of large shopping and entertainment complex in the Sandton area, containing lots of upscale stores, and some good places to eat. It was a nice place to wander around and wear off our jet lag the day after our arrival.

We received a very nice welcome upon our arrival, and were escorted to our interconnecting rooms, as promised. The rooms were well-appointed, with comfortable beds and furniture. Nice bathrooms with separate shower stalls. Quality of towels and supplies was good. We had a nice view of the courtyard at the Sandton complex, and some soccer was being played down below. The televisions could do with updating for a five star hotel.

We had some issues with the daily housekeeping in our rooms. A couple of juice glasses and some other refuse stayed in our room for over a day, even though we had put them aside to be removed for us. There was no indication that our rooms were being vacuumed each day. Our beds were left stripped during the day, and we were interrupted later in the afternoon while resting, so that the maid could make the beds.

We enjoyed the buffet breakfast at the hotel, and had a very good (and reasonably priced) dinner at the hotel restaurant. The staff at the hotel were all very pleasant and friendly. We also received prompt and tasty room service on the night of our arrival.

On a Sunday night, a group of party guys kept us awake with their singing and carrying on in the hotel bar until 4 a.m. in the morning, when they must have finally decided to go to bed. I called the night manager twice to complain ( at 2 a.m., and again at 3 a.m.), only to be told that he was "keeping an eye on the situation". When I suggested he might want to do something more, I did not receive a satisfactory response. I'm sure the entire hotel was kept awake that night, and I know there were many complaints. Unfortunately, the hotel bar is on the ground level of the foyer, which in turn is completely open to 5 floors of guest rooms above it. For those who appreciate it, the bar is open 24/7. For those who are jet lagged and not sleeping well in the first place, this was a small nightmare.

We were very pleased we decided to take the Soweto city tour, even though we iniially felt a bit odd doing this. It was a moving and educational experience.

In summary, we felt this hotel was OK, but not up to international standards for a five star hotel. We would probably look into staying elsewhere next time.

Besides its excellent location, this hotel does very little to justify its price.
Service was very poor and not helpful. Rooms seem old and not specially big. Asked for a late check-out which was denied and instead offered to SELL me a tour of Jo'burg.
Definitely won't be staying again.

on the good side - the hotel straddles some of the best shopping in j'burg and the rooms are huge and the room service food is fantastic - get the lamb ! No internet in the room and you have to go to reception to get a voucher!

on the downside no ironing boards - you have to PAY for someone to iron your clothes; the bathroom is weirdly designed - glass doors opening out and the shower pretty mediocre!
