Arrived at this hotel today coming in from Botswana-absolutely shattered! Fabulous reception and that you can send a shuttlebus to pick me up from the railway station. I was amazed that I was actually upgraded to a suite Which was a very welcome albeit very unnecessary surprise and treat. The hotel is walking distance from the main Mandella Squares Shopping area and this is all very safe and heavily patrolled by Adt security. The hotel itself is immaculately clean and staff are superbly turned out and very polite. I had a beer this evening in the Lords Bar was served by "Given" who was so polite, Extremely proud of his job and professional. The hotel itself is set in some beautiful lush gardens which is very different from the concrete city outside the front door. You really feel that you are stepping back in time and it's a real haven away from the Day-to-day city life. There is no question that this is the only hotel I would ever stay in Johannesburg. In short, "this hotel has personality" which so many others in the immediate area just simply don't have. Well done to everybody and thank you for making my stay so utterly awesome.

We are thrilled to read that your all round experience was such a wonderful one and that you enjoyed the upgrade. I spent 4 nights in Balalaika in mid-March. The hotel has fantastic character and visually stands out against. But more than this, more than the great breakfasts, 2 outdoor pools, and cigar lounge (pub), the best thing about this hotel is the staff. Everyone is genuinely friendly, not american fake friendly, but real friendly! One of the bar staff took delight in my insistence that he was in fact Tupac, and one female bar member (i forgot her name - long dark straight hair, and from Durban) was an instantly likeable, bubbly girl. In the end i was sorry to leave.

Side note - the affiliated Bull run restaurant was a bit crappy, but i maybe visited on a bad night!

Room Tip: Hotel is vast and spread across 2 levels. I would select one close to the first pool, nearest the cigar lounge

Dear ‘Nobaldo’.
Thank you for taking the time to write on ‘tripadvisor’. It is wonderful to read that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you found the STAFF so friendly. Your praise is much appreciated and I have congratulated the TEAM for doing a great job! However, it is concerning to read that your experience at the Bull Run seemed to have been such a disappointing one? Did you by any chance raise your dis-satisfaction with any of the Managers there?
We look forward in welcoming you back again soon.
Kind regards,
Jörg Zwinscher

My husband and I stayed at the hotel for one night at the beginning of March. We have stayed in several hotels in the same area and I like this one the best. The room was nice, the common areas of the hotel were well maintained, and the garden was beautiful. It is also within walking distance of the train station and Sandton mall. We especially liked the breakfast which was included in our package. Out of all the hotels we have visited in SA this breakfast was the best we have had. I am already planning on booking this hotel again for our next stop over in Sandton.

I had 2 Nights in Jo'Burg and this was an excellent choice compared to other places I have stayed. it's a 5 minute walk to an excellent mall and restaurants and quite safe. the hotel is a bit unusual...it's like a garden in the middle of the city. it looks like 2 hotels which have been joined together. I stayed in the back and it was very quiet and comfortable. The outside is not much to look at but once inside it's a mix of old world decor and gardens. there are various places to relax outside in the fine weather. there are 2 small pools with bar service and fresh towels. the rooms aren't huge but very comfy. the concierge was wonderful and organized and recommended various trips. I would definitely go back.

Room Tip: if mobility is an issue, be sure to ask for a room in the front half of the hotel. In the back half, ask for an even numbered room so you have a view of the garden. the hotel has many "arms" so it is hard to tell which sections are the best.
