Protea Hotel by Marriott Johannesburg Balalaika Sandton
Ranked #16 of 47 Hotels in Sandton
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed May 31, 2012

Balalaika is a good enough hotel for the price. However, you do feel like you’re in a time warp. Think 70s and 80s. Black ‘n’ White press clippings of a bygone era are proudly hung up in the corridors, harking back to happier times. On the good side, the concierge & bell boys are friendly and warm. The same cannot be said for the reception gang. It seems, not even a million Rand, tax-free, will light them up. But the big question is, why Sandton ? If you’re on a holiday with the family, and looking for a “safe” location why not stay at the more happening Rosebank area ? Sandton is clinical and grim, with one large mall, serving the usual brands. If you plan to spend your holiday enclosed in a mall, so be it. Rosebank too has a mall, but the mix is more bohemian. They also have a great flea market attached, and serviced by the comfy Gautrain.

We recently got married at the Protea Hotel Balalaika and our day was perfect from the minute it began until the moment we left for our honeymoon the next morning. Having heard that they are mainly viewed as a businessman's hotel, I was at first slightly reticent to have our wedding there, but after meeting with Natalie Irwin, the Banqueting Co-Ordinator, both my husband and I felt that we had uncovered a secret jewel!

Many of the wedding guests stayed over at the hotel for the night of the wedding, and the service we, and they, were given was phenomenal. Nothing was too much to ask, and we were treated like royalty all day and night, which is what you want on your big day.

As for the hotel as a venue: the room was gorgeous, the food was absolutely outstanding, guests are still talking about the grilled prawns, and the suites are absolutely beautiful.

Thank you to all of the staff who dealt with this Bridezilla in such a kind and caring manner, and for making the day the fairytale we dreamt it to be.

Room Tip: Village Manor is a wonderful venue for functions. The Rose buffet menu is the bet value for money a...

I have stayed at he Balalaika once for business and once with my wife and the rooms and service were both excellent. We now as a company use the hotel for many of our overseas colleagues due to its proximity to Sandton City, Nelson Mandela square and also the Gautrain.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the entertainment areas are generally quieter.

Good value for a Sandton hotel, as long as you get a good rate, and this is not always direct with the hotel. I found vastly varying rates, so it's worth shopping around. The rates also vary daily depending on demand. Check whether breakfast is included, because it's pricey if you pay on the day.Very peaceful once you're through the lobby, with a pleasant terrace for eating and drinking. There are two pools and very pretty gardens. Well positioned near the Sandton shopping centre (easy walk, but probably best not after dark). It is adjacent to the Village Walk shopping centre, but this is due to be demolished so nearly everything is now closed there. Good value parking with direct access to the hotel. One very good restaurant (The Bull Run) attached to the hotel, and a couple of other good restaurants in Village Walk,, although this might change as the development plans emerge. Basic but very good value bar food. My room was a standard double and was very comfortable. Excellent desk with multiple sockets for different types of international plugs. Free internet.

Stayed just 1 night here in the standard room. Overall the hotel was decent , but the rooms and facilities needs a major overhaul as mentioned before in many reviews.

Positive: Old world charm and great location
Negatives: Worn out hotel and very disinterested & cold housekeeping staff who seem to give you the impression that they are doing you favour by listening and serving you.

I stayed here for 1 night so wasn't bad but would not recommend more than 2 nights. There are plenty of good hotels within walking distance so one should compare prices before booking.

Dear ‘Megsom’.
Thank you for writing your feedback on ‘tripadvisor’. We pride ourselves in being a very unique Hotel; offering good ‘old world charm’ and good old courteous manners. We thus have to disagree about your comment “worn out Hotel”. We are not a typical high-rise Hotel, but stretched out, due to our beautiful luscious gardens. Our Colonial décor & style gives a warm and inviting ambience. It is concerning to read that you were disappointed by the Housekeeping Staff. Did something specific occur and may I ask if this was brought to a Manager’s attention? Please feel free to contact our Guest Relations Manager, Christine (Christine@balalaika.co.za)
