Each of our many visits to Claire's exceeds the previous in warmth of hospitality and service. Not forgetting the best omelettes this side of ......... delivered so graciously by our friend , Zodwa Its a short hop from the Gautrain and Sandton City with many excellent restaurants a block or two away. Claire is always available with friendly advice and an intimate knowledge of the many beautiful birds who grace the garden outside the breakfast room window.

Room Tip: Well worth the little extra for the luxury rooms.

This is a special place to stay anytime. The location is perfect. Close to Nelson Mandela Square full of shops, restaurants and cafes. The room is very comfortable well decorated and equiped and made me feel like I was in a 5 star hotel. I spent 11 days in Johannesburg in this lovely and luxury guest house. While in the room you have the exactly Sofitel's feeling. Everything is in a pleasingly orderly and clean condition. There is a very decent swimming pool where you can seat, read and enjoy the calm atmosphere. Besides all that you will get a warmness and kindness help from Claire and Zodwa. I highly recommend this place.

We used Claires as our base while we travelled around South Africa. Everything was just right. Between Claire and Zodwa they ensured that we were well looked after, even having the heating on when we arrived late on a couple of times.

Easy acccess location to Sandton, the north of Johannesburg and the central areas.

Great breakfasts watching the birds feeding.

Very warm and homely setting, a definite re-visit place.

That was quick. We loved hearing about your family gatherings and hope that you are now rested from your flight and all the activity of your visit to SA.

Our 25th anniversary trip to southern Africa began with 4 nights in Johannesburg—necessary to get Star Alliance frequent flier business class seats. After much research, we settled on Claire’s of Sandton, a very nice B&B in the Sandton suburbs of Jo-burg. In short, Claire’s was absolutely great, as were Claire & Harry. They both were ever ready with advice and counsel (e.g., Can we get this schedule done in one day? What time should we avoid being on the road?). And, Zodwa (aka, “Z”), the resident manager, was always available to meet our every need. And, the cost of our 4-night stay at Claire’s was probably less than 1 night at the airport Intercontinental Hotel—if an overstatement, not by much. “Gourmet” is the right description for Claire’s breakfasts! Delicious hot & cold options were always available. For me, the highlight of breakfast was the multigrain toast—incredible! The Jo-burg area is full of things to do, including the Apartheid Museum, the Cradle of Humankind archeological site, & the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens. We visited Pretoria, but were underwhelmed—very nice architecture and history, but pretty much disinterested in & unaccommodating to tourists.

As to logistics, we rented an Avis car for getting around. By the way, we found Avis in every airport that we passed through on our 23-day, 7-location trip (Polokwane in South Africa, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, and Livingston in Zambia), as well as across the street from the Sandton Gautrain station). We took the Gautrain (high-speed commuter train) from the O.R. Tambo (Johannesburg) Airport to Sandton (13 minutes). We arrived in the evening, so we took a taxi to Claire’s and picked up our Avis car the next morning, when our friends arrived (direct flight from JFK). We decided that picking up and returning the car in Sandton, to avoid having to drive back to the airport during rush hour, made the most sense—and it worked out perfectly.

Summing up, if you are going to southern Africa via Jo-burg, plan on taking a few days before your main trip. With the help of nightly melatonin, by the time our safari began, we were through the jetlag from our 18-hour, 6 time zone international flight (Dulles-Jo-burg on South African Air). And, I can’t say enough about how Claire’s of Sandon was the perfect start of a perfect 25th anniversary trip.

Room Tip: The value that Claire's offers is superb! So, reserve the best room that is available. We stay...

All of us at Claires thank you for your generous and comprehensive review of both the guest house and the Johannesburg area. We are pleased that we were able to help make your anniversary a success. There is certainly more than enough entertaining and interesting activity to keep you occupied for a few days with Claires as your comfortable base. Some of our guests only stay ay Claires for a day or two and inevitable comment that the stay was too short. . Good luck for the next 25 years.

We couldn't have had a better welcome to South Africa! We strongly recommend this accomodation: it's in a quiet location with easy access to the centre of Sandton, its thriving garden is the ideal home for the most colourful birds, its cosy rooms, the lavish breakfast and the warmness and kindness of the hosts and the staff make you feel at ease at anytime and you would never want to leave at the end! It represents our ideal kind of accomodation and the first real taste of this wonderful country!

I booked some accommodation in March when my daughters and I met in Joburg for a wedding. The accommodation was top class, and the priices for extras (wine etc) excellent, not to mention the service - Zodwa was a star and nothing was too much for her. Well done!!

After traveling for 30 hours to get to South Africa, we were very happy to check in to Claires. It was a wonderful introduction to the people of South Africa. Everyone (from the hosts to the servers at the restaurant nearby to the guy running the wine shop) was super friendly and welcoming. We stayed in the "Spring" room for one night. Loved the bathroom and it's heated floor. We are starting to consider renovating our own bathroom and made sure to take many pictures of Claires' bathroom as inspiration. The breakfast was huge and made to order. A lovely introduction to how much this country loves breakfast (at least from our experiences). Would definitely recommend it for one night or as a base for your holiday or business.
