The bird hide on a water filled quarry is a must for birders and the adjacent blue crane restaurant is a perfect place for sundowners

Good food in bird sanctuary. The bird sanctuary and accompanying Blue Crane restaurant is very peaceful, although menu is average. The sanctuary, restaurant and adjoining park are. extremely Child friendly

Open deck with view across the pond, service poor, food average, parking available. You can relax in nature in central Pretoria.

The grounds are large and bushy so need determined Birder to enjoy BUT there is the BIRDHIDE accessible from the Suburban Tar road which will satisfy all but the diehard Birder.
The Restaurant with a view of the lake and birdlife on it , is sophisticated and excellent.

I last visited the Austin Roberts Bird sanctuary in about 1976 when I was still at school in Pretoria, so it came as a pleasant surprise to see it is still going strong. The enclosed bird hide is a great place to watch the antics of the geese, ducks, herons, coots and crowned cranes. At the restaurant, we sat on the verandah and were treated to visits by the blue crane (our national bird) - the family of 3 came to beg from our table and delighted old and young with their quizzy stares and loud honks. The restaurant also serves buffet breakfasts and lunches and the food did smell very tempting indeed.

The play area outside the sanctuary is well provided with swings and climbing frames and was well patronised by young families.

To get there: Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary is located in Brooklyn, Pretoria.

From the Fountains Circle (on the R21), take the George Storrar turn-off. Travel east passing Koningin Wilhelmina Avenue, where George Storrar Drive changes into Middel Street. Turn left at the first robot, Dey Street, and then left again at Boshoff Street. The entrance to the sanctuary is on the left.
