We had dinner at Black Bamboo last night.
The food was fantastic and tasty. However, we never got to see the people that made the great food, we just saw the people serving it and the service was atrocious! Only one sprite zero can that had no gas and the excuse was that they only ordered yesterday - not good planning to wait till you have no stock and then to order new stock? Service was slow and the restaurant was quiet. When the main meal was served, 2 of us had no forks. Luckily we were 5 people at a six seater table, so we could take those 2 forks to eat with. The people serving us had very little interest in what they were doing and how they were doing it. If this is a 5* hotel / restaurant, they should act that way. I would give the food 5 stars but the overall experience due to the poor service will be maybe average. Disappointed and as it was my choice for a business dinner, I cannot take clients there again. The managers will have to look at delivering a 5* experience OVERALL and not just in the food section.

Food at the restaurant was excellent. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dessert was also delicious. Wait staff were so friendly and helpful - got to know us over the week and anticipated our orders. Recommend the restaurant to all!

On a recent visit to the Black Bamboo (recommended by friend) we had the unfortunate experience of ending up with and understaffed establishment. When I made the booking, I wasn’t aware that the chef would be on holiday; this was only communicated to us when we sat down. We had some difficulties to enter the restaurant, one of our guests wasn’t able to climb stairs, but they didn’t have a ramp or a hand railing. This caused embarrassment form me as the paying host, I also find it odd that they have a wheel chair accessible toilet, but from the front entrance wheelchairs are not accessible. The service was at the best of times just adequate; our starters were served 15 minutes apart, so the party of 7 people didn’t enjoy their starter together (4 of us ordered the same). The wine list is completely random selections of wine, it’s very limited and there wasn’t any suggestions made of wine-to-food pairing, quite disappointing really. The main course was excellently prepared. The meat was soft and juicy and cooked to each individual’s liking. However, the ginger and chilli chips and pumpkin bake we ordered for the table only joined the main course towards the end, and even though we ordered enough for the entire party, only 2 plates came out of the kitchen. It tasted good, but it was served too late. Desserts were really good an tasty and well sized portions.
In summary: the setting, ambience and food at the Black Bamboo are great, but the poor service, underwhelming wine list and the fact that they don’t have wheelchair accessibility is a let-down. Once they have sorted out their wine list, trained their staff I would look forward to go back and enjoy my meal in harmony.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review.

Tough as it may be to receive negative feedback, it is only through honest feedback like yours that we can improve our shortcomings and better our service.

Firstly I would like to sincerely apologise for your unfavourable experience, the service you received is completely unacceptable. You also give us some complements for which I'm grateful.
I would like to address all the negative points you raised;

We are proud to be a wheelchair friendly establishment, we have a wheelchair friendly bedroom as well as ramp access to all public area's and a wheelchair accessible public bathroom. We cater for people with disabilities through our designated parking next to the lift in our basement. From the lift our restaurant is accessible without any steps. What is frustrating is that non of our staff indicated this to you during your visit. They will all be made aware of this.

Regarding the service; I find it completely unacceptable that your table did not receive your food all at the same time. Currently we are putting a lot of effort into improving our service and training our management and waiters. We understand the importance of service and nothing short of excellent service at all times will do. Our staff will all be made aware of your experience to ensure that this does not happen again.

Lastly I would like to inform you that our wine list have been completely updated and revamped for 2014. We are also introducing a craft menu later in February with specifically selected beers, whiskey, brandy and rum. Our new wine list have specifically been selected to introduce new exclusive boutique wines not common in restaurants in Pretoria to complement our new food menu released two weeks ago. During this week we are hosting Creation wines with an exclusive "test" menu where guests get to rate and score our food and wine.

Once again I sincerely apologise for your unfavourable experience and hope that you will give us a second chance to impress you with better food, unique wine's and of course excellent service!

Kind regards,
