The Botanical Gardens are OK, but honestly the variety of flora and fauna is not great. It's a pleasant place to have a picnic and certainly it's completely safe, but there are many more interesting places to visit.
We were also disappointed that as senior citizens we had to still pay the full entrance fee every day except Tuesday.

This is a popular Sunday morning picnic spot for families - reading the papers and playing cricket or some such. There is a reasonable entrance fee that allows you into the garden, and you can walk about and identify the various plants or just do as most do and find a good spot to read, snooze, eat, play....an on-site Restuarant offers reasonably-priced basic fare. It's nothing to write home about but good enough if you didn't take your own picnic basket and don't expect haute cuisine. Not essential if you are on a whirlwind tour that includes Pretoria but lovely if you have more time and want to chill amidst greenery.

If you have kids and want to take them somewhere you can let them run free, this is the place. As it is access-controlled it is safer and the lawns are so big you can always keep an eye on your kids. There are some nice short hiking routes in the garden and a lovely waterfall. The gardens are simply amazing.

It is a place where you can safely stroll, play and eat. The restaurant (inside) serves light lunches. It is more of a coffee shop. here is a another restaurant close to the entrance where you can sit on a deck with a view on the gardens.
It is good to see families/friends getting together and be relaxed. There are restrictions on what you are allowed to take in, eg no bicycles, loud music and dogs
It is always neat and clean despite so many people be there at once.
Sometimes the garden host events, then it is not so quiet and parking space can be an issue.

Spend the day at the Gardens and bring your picnic basket - there is plenty of space in the shade for a picnic (bring your own basket) and then take a walk around the gardens. Everything is beautifully maintained. Also check their website for music events that are held during the year.
