Owner description: The majestic Voortrekker Monument is situated in the northern part of South Africa in the Pretoria (Tshwane) region in a nature reserve. It is a unique Monument which commemorates the Pioneer history of Southern Africa and the history of the Afrikaner and is situated in a beautiful setting. Today it is the most visited heritage site of its kind in Gauteng and one of the top ten cultural historical visitor attractions in the country.

It is always heart warming to go back to your roots...and and the Voortrekker Monument we had done just that. It is very neat and well looked after. The restaurant is a bit expensive thought.

This was an excellent visit worth every cent. The grounds are beautiful with plenty of outdoor walking, bicycle's to rent and even horse rides. The Monument is brilliant to see as well as the modern history museum. This is very much a part of South Africa's history and so gives a broader vision of the very complex politics of South Africa's past. Even if you have no interest in politics, the views are fantastic, especially from Schanskop. Don't skip this part of the museum. Allow enough time to visit the whole area and wear comfortable walking shoes as you climb many steps. The lift to the top of the monument was also a pleasant surprise.

If you visit Johannesburg and Pretoria and want to have a better understanding of the complexities of South Africa, combine visits to the Apartheid Museum, Liliesleaf Farm, and Freedom Park with the Voortrekker Monument and Museum. Like the pioneers of the US, the Voortreekers migrated north from Capetown seeking new areas to develop. The perspective presented at the monument and museum is of a people seeking to establish a new life. The black Africans, whose land they eventually occupied and developed, are not treated with historic sensitivity thus the need to visit other historical sites for a complete picture of what led to Apartheid and an understanding of the stratification in South African society. The monument and museum have informative collections of artifacts, although many displays in the monument are somewhat stale. The views are outstanding from the grounds. It is definitely worth a visit.

Great place to be if you want to learn more about Boere history. The building itself is beautiful and the stone carvings and exhibits are exquisite. Very informative and will definitely go back as 2 hours there weren't sufficient.
