Owner description: The majestic Voortrekker Monument is situated in the northern part of South Africa in the Pretoria (Tshwane) region in a nature reserve. It is a unique Monument which commemorates the Pioneer history of Southern Africa and the history of the Afrikaner and is situated in a beautiful setting. Today it is the most visited heritage site of its kind in Gauteng and one of the top ten cultural historical visitor attractions in the country.

“Impressive - albeit aesthetically wanting?”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 30, 2013

We were taken here by friends who live locally and one of whom can trace their roots back to the original Voortrekkers. It is an impressive building telling an inspiring story (although looking down from the top inside is not for the faint hearted). My overwhelming impression of the outside is that it wasn't aesthetically to my taste - like an opportunity for grandeur had somehow been missed - but I accept that is a personal thing. Inside was educational and impressive. For South Africa I actually thought this quite expensive to visit compared to other attractions - but there is nowhere else quite like it. Not somewhere I would feel the need to return to, but I am glad I have done it.

“South Africa has got talent”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2013

The art of portraits on the wall and the collection of history of the British,Ndebeles,Zulus and the Pedis quiet interesting. When you are far in the city you can still see the Museum and it looks very small but getting there you will notice the efforts that have been put on the building that it was one of the best in a million, i will always recommend it, i will be lying if i try to mention any dislike

This monument was built in 1938 and is an enourmous landmark in South African History.Very educational and guided tours are available. The monument is also the host for various music festivals held occassionally and also advertised in the Pretoria newspapers well in advance.

“Monument to an incredible migration”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 9, 2013

The Voortrekker Monument is one of the largest and imposing memorials I have seen and the story it tells inside is no less impressive.

The Voortrekkers (pioneers) left the Cape Province during the first part off the 19th century to look for new land where they could live independent from British control. This brought them into contact with the Zulu and here you will find our the stories of the Battle of Blood River, Bloukrans, the Church of the Sacred Vow, the massacre of Piet Retief and the Anglo-Boer War which ultimately led to the Union of South Africa in the early 20th century.

For anyone wanting to understand the history of South Africa, this is an excellent place to visit.

It is also possible to access the roof of the monument by stairs of lift giving a wonderful view of the city of Pretoria to the north.

The one slight problem is that I found sign posts weren't the best so if you don't have SatNav, it is worth looking at a map before you go to help find the entrance.
