“nice food and good atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2014

We have been for lunch and we all enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere in the shade. I liked especially the decor in the restaurant ... just a bit different to everything else which makes a difference. Food was nice, more or less the usual South African menu with a few meals up the "Mediterranean Road" which I really enjoyed. Service is friendly and efficient. One of us had a bit bad luck with a meal but it was no question for the waiter to change it when we brought it to his attention. Overall a nice experience and I would like to try it out in the evening too.

“Very Pleasant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2013

As you walk the entwined lanes of the Duncan Yard, you do get a rustic artistic impression and Papa's continues in that same mode.

Seating - both indoor and outdoor.
Outside - very rustic with interesting art pieces on the walls and a unique water feature. The tables are rather close, so would not say this is for a romantic intimate setting especially during the day.
Service - rather slow but you really don't go there if you are in a hurry to eat; this is not a fast food outlet - possibly if you just want coffee and cake; the waiter was very pleasant, smiling and had a brilliant sense of humor too!
Food - excellent value and delicious. Servings are not large but adequate. The fried fish was superbly done (you can have it grilled as well) -it was light and crispy on the outside and soft flakes on the inside! Their chips were not traditional chips but more like home-fries sliced with skins which were tasty and well seasoned served with a small side salad and a lemon wedge. The stuffed chicken with pepperdews was delectable served with a choice of starch - both dishes had appropriate smooth traditional sauces.
A good selection of beverages - hot/cold and alcoholic/non-alcoholic.

This is a very casual but arty place where the atmosphere is relaxing - and all in all a very pleasant restaurant!

“Food ok, but horrible acoustics!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2013

Had a nice lunch, and as it was raining we had to sit inside. Place was crowded, but you could barely understand each other while talking! An interior decorator should do something about the interior space regarding acoustics.

“Not bad but service terrible”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 12, 2013 via mobile

Never my first choice in Pretoria but on route. Could not find parking so they have to do someting right, we thought. We parked a mile down the road and on arrival I was quite amazed how busy the restaurant was. Hungry as a starving lion we enjoyed the outside garden courtyard setting and rustic decor mixed with very little attention to detail. Festive and friendly nevertheless. Unfortunately the service was terrible and the waiter was completely incapable of explaining the menu options and possible alternatives. We had curry butternut soup (not bad but somewhat too sweet and too much cream.) We had to devise our own salad since the waiter could not assist and the peri-peri chicken was not too bad either. Later the oversized cappuccino was good but we had to move out of the way of a function being prepared for without anyone remotely explaining to us whats happening or apologising. Will I be back? Only on invitation if someone else is paying. But I can understand that the setting will make patrons return.

“Quirky, but avoidable”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 14, 2013

We were attracted by the quirky yard. I went there with a friend for a Sunday brunch. I was served stale bread and some kind of seafood stew with uncooked frozen bit. My friend's drink came in a dirty glass. We sat outside under the trees and had a great time watching the chickens running around. we didn't stick around for long since the service was awful and the wailing musician killed the atmosphere for us. An overall yuck experience, and it's no excuse that the place had just opened its doors for business that morning.
