We had a glorious stay at the Vineyard Hotel. We were exhausted from traveling for several weeks, and were really thrilled to have time to relax at this property. The building itself is a lovely combination of historic-vineyard-house and modern hotel -- they've done a very nice job integrating the two. The restaurants are great, and always packed -- you know when a hotel is drawing tons of locals for its spa and food (lunch & dinner), it's doing something right!
The service we had here was truly exceptional, too. Everyone leaped to help us whenever we looked hesitant or approached the front desk, whatever the question/problem. The general manager was also very assiduous in making sure we were enjoying ourselves, even arranging to get us dinner reservations at one of the already-booked restaurants. We also were offered free drinks in the lobby bar while we waited for our room to be readied. Oh -- and at night the maids come around with chocolates and a South African bedtime story, which we found very sweet and unique.
Our room was standard (and needed new carpet!), but it did have many nice amenities such as the dimming lights and the writing table. The bathroom was also recently renovated -- it's a glass cube (fogged, of course!) with great products and a great, hot shower.
The facilities and the grounds are really fantastic -- the main house, with the lobby, lobby bar, The Square restaurant (where an excellent buffet breakfast is served), a tea room, and conference facilities... and then huge gardens, with paths and a river running through it, and outdoor areas to sit... and then another complex with the great gym and pool (both indoor and outdoor), and the spa. You could stay here quite awhile!
The spa is supposed to be excellent too -- I didn't have a treatment, but my boyfriend did, and he said it was fantastic (the 2-hour bamboo, I believe).
My only warning is that this is quite a ways into the Southern Suburbs, and you really need a car to enjoy the area if you mean to leave the hotel. We at first planned on relying on buses, but ended up with a car and were quite happy we did. You could always just relax at the hotel -- but for the price of a cab there and back, you can rent a car in SA! You can also access the Constantia vineyards and Kirstenbosch very easily from the hotel with a car.
Overall, a great stay!
