Having lived most of my life in Cape Town, l would often go for tea and sconces at this hotel which is nestled near table mountain, but very central location to the City Centre and Waterfront and the shopping centre Cavendish, which is a lovely up market mall. The whole area of Claremont and Newlands is lovely. I now live in London and had the opportunity of staying at the hotel and experiencing it from a tourist point of view. The best selling feature of this hotel is its gorgeous gardens, with beautiful vistas of Table Mountain, and especially in summer the established trees provide much needed shade for afternoon tea. The scones are especially delicious as well as the vast breakfast buffet provided in the morning. There is a wonderful big pool long enough to do laps, a well established gym and a beautiful spa. The staff were gracious and friendly and the rooms have been remoulded whilst more modern they do not have the cold feeling of some contemporary hotels. Good mattress and linen, and the bathroom had a separate shower and bath. The one aspect that is very important to me is how quiet the rooms were, as they set apart from the main activity of the hotel. Ground floor mountain facing having their own terraces with sun chairs. There are several restaurants with wonderfully different decor and they have managed to bring the old 'dutch' charm into the 21st century without losing the integrity of the history. The tortoise who has been there many years adds a wonderful touch and children delight in being able to go up close. There is adequate parking and with Cavendish 5 mins away, shopping and movies are easily assessable. Getting to the highway to get into central Cape Town or to take walks up the mountain is very easy. I can highly recommend this hotel and hope to be back there in December.

Room Tip: Mountain Facing is the best

Stayed here for 6 nights in December on my annual business trip to Cape Town and the Vineyard never disappoints. Staff are always friendly, professional and helpful. I usually stay at their Courtyard Deluxe room which has a more open view (partially facing Table Mountain) compared to the standard rooms. Rooms are modern, generous in size. Beds are supportive to my liking, and the showers are strong - these are just what I needed on business trips.

Daily breakfast is excellent, if you do have time, do sit outside on the patio which overlooks the beautiful garden. The bar is also always busy, and perfect for an after-work drinks. The flagship restaurant, Myoga, serves good fusion cuisine, which is quite nice as food in SA can be quite heavy at times. The gym is also great, with modern machinery, and the pool has ample suntanning chairs for a lazy afternoon.

Overall, although the Vineyard is not located at the water front or Camps Bay area where most tourists would stay, I think it is a very solid and good value hotel which delivers for travelers both on business and for pleasure.

Room Tip: Book a Courtyard Deluxe room and request high floor!

On our first trip to South Africa, my girlfriend and I have been mostly guided around by a good friend of mine and his girlfriend from the lovely, albeit flawed, country. We all booked into the Vineyard, as he and his family have stayed there for years, and there is a reason why. From the grounds to the rooms to the restaurants and bars, the place is as good as it gets when it comes to hotels. The single flaw, and it is glaring, is the horribly slow - and limited - internet access. I realize that this is a weak point in South Africa's infrastructure, but I'm posting this review from the Hilton in Sandton and the internet here works really well. The place is so amazing, however, that I still give it a full rating.

Thank you so much for your comments. We are working on finding a solution to the erratic speeds obtainable on the internet. This sits at the top of our priority list, finding the right technology to apply to our situation is our challenge. Your next visit you will see an improvement.

The hotel is ok. Bed was comfortable enough, There are very loud frogs that makes eery noises at night but it's not without a sort of rustic charm. Carpet needed replacing...some stains etc. The bathroom was interesting- instead of the usual wall, glass was used (frosted lower, clear upper). This is very cool but in practice light spills out at night so you may wake your partner.

They have decided to charge everyone a dollar per night for a local charity. I think this is worthy, admirable and annoying. Let the hotel donate the money and then add it to the room price if they want but making this an opt-out donation is not IMO the business of a hotel.

Service is great in general.

The gardens are just stunning. Having a drink or tea- depending on your cultural preference - is a wonderful experience. You're surrounded by lush green scenes everywhere with the mountain in the background. This really makes the hotel worth-while. It's a great change from other urban experiences at hotels. It's close enough to the city-maybe 15 minutes in your car- that the extra miles are really worth the experience of staying there to get away from the usual rush.

Room Tip: Room facing the central area have frog noises.

Thank you so much for your posting.

I am happy to report that the week following your stay we completed the carpet replacements in the hotel.

We do have rooms with solid wall bathrooms, please note the preference at the time of booking and we will oblige as best we can.

Warm regards

An amazing finish to our honeymoon and we were made feel very special from the begining of out stay. We stayed over the Christmas period and the service, friendliness of all staff, food etc was excellent. This hotel was reccomended to us by family and we were not dissapointed! The gardens of the hotel are absolutely stunning and we look forward to returning to S A and the Vineyard will be first on our itenerary.

Room Tip: Table mountain facing rooms are worth the extra cost!

This was my fourth, and hopefully not last, stay at the Vineyard in Newlands. I travel a lot for work and the Vineyard is probably my favourite hotel anywhere. The gardens are beautiful with Table Mountain as a backdrop. The bar and restaurants are excellent and the older rooms are in the process of being refurbished. If you are unconcerned about not being in the city centre (only 20 mins away), look no further.

Room Tip: Try for a mountain view if available.
