“Terrible service”
Reviewed April 13, 2013

Kloofzight is set in a very picturesque setting but the service from the waiters are Terrible. After complaining to management, we were assigned a new waiter. His name is Victor. Every one should ask for him, he is excellent. The first waiter should not be working at a 5 star establishment. She should not work at any restaurant.
Kloofzight should better train their waiters or screen them.

The service made it an average experience.

I stayed at Kloofzicht for a weekend getaway, our room was still dirty on arrival, there was broken glass on the carpet, my partner even cut his foot from it. At least management did attend to this once I informed them. Not enough dinning options, and no room service. The room was the main problem for me, 5 star should at least mean clean!

Room Tip: Ask for a room that has a view of the valley and dam.

Was a very good experience, great rooms with a great view and great food. Dinner was one of the best I've had, and at a very reasonable price (R225 pp for a 3 course meal). Stayed in one of the superior suites, very good view over looking one of the trout dams.

We don't often go out for valentines evening because our experience has always been a rushed one, with overcrowded restaurants, two seatings so you are rushed in and out, bad service and poor food.

We have stayed at Kloofzicht lodge before and just never had the occasion to go back.

For Valentines day 2013 they put together a fabulous menu at a rate of R350-00 per person. Given the nature of the menu, we thought lets break our rule and go out to dinner for Valentines day.... an excellent decision it turned out to be.

We were wowed with a 5 course meal ranging from a meze starter platter that included oysters, sushi, some fabulous pates and a delicious Bloody Mary cocktail, followed by a consomme soup, I had lobster and salmon as my main course while my husband relished on the Loin of lamb, chocolate brownies for dessert and a delicious cheeseboard and coffee to round the meal off.

The attention to detail is worth noting... from the live music, laid back atmosphere, great service and staff willing to serve your every need to the Bottle of jelly beans that I got to take home with me ( much to my daughters delight given her disgust that no-one had got her anything for Valentines day!).

Kloofzicht Lodge is beautifully located amid the koppies of Muldersdrift with a beautiful dam that lies before you and which makes for a beautiful setting as you sit in the restaurant looking out on this spectacular view, particularly on a beautiful highveld summer evening.

Indeed a fabulous evening ... thank you for breaking the myth that a Valentines evening out has to be rushed and tasteless!

I have stayed at Kloofzicht on numerous occasions over the last 7 years. I did feel at one stage they were losing their touch in terms of value for money and the signs of wear and tear were starting to show. My faith has been restored after my recent visit to them a couple of weeks ago. Room was upgraded, staff were excellent. The food was exceptional value for money. I would challenge some restaurants in JHB to try and compete with the dinner we had for the price of R250 pp. Outstanding value for a great 3 course meal. The spa was extremely professional and you simply can't beat the scenery.

Well done Kloofzicht. You have restored some very fond memories I had 7 years ago

My husband and I decided to spend new year's eve at this lodge, as a friend of mine had stayed there and said it was really nice.

Let's start with the positive: the location is very convenient, only 40min drive from Joburg.
The lodge is located in a beautiful area, the scenery is amazing, very nice walking trails where you get to see herbivores.
We loved the room design, and it overlooks a small lake with green hills in the backdrop, it was a delight to see from the bed. It was also quite relaxing to enjoy the view while sitting in the small balcony.

the negatives are unfortunately more:
when we first got to the room, we found a rather big flying bug and a spider inhabiting the bathroom. It is quite understandable that such things would be common in a place nestled in nature like this one. However, I'm sure if the room was thoroughly cleaned before our arrival, no such thing would've occurred!!

The pools are really in a poor condition. The main pool, located in front of the reception and restaurant area, is the only one where you can swim (if you can manage to ignore the green mold on the sides!). There were only 4 chairs around, and just one umbrella. when we got there, we asked for an umbrella, stayed there for hours, but it never came!

As for the other smaller pools, I think they should be called stagnant ponds rather than pools...

As for the service, that's truly the worst part.
Upon check-in, the receptionist, though very friendly, was at a complete loss and confused. Couldn't find our reservation right away, and when we asked to settle the payment upfront, she didn't even know the amount, seemed to take a guess at it " Oh, I think it's..., ummm, yes, yes, right?" which is hardly something to expect from a 5-star accommodation...

Again, the same person upon check out, was still at a loss as to whether we had settled the payment or not, whether we had attended the new year's banquet or not, whether we had paid for it or not " On the system, you are ready to check out, sir"... meaning if we weren't honest decent people, we could've simply said Thank you and goodbye!!! So we explained that we did pay for the room, but still had to pay for the banquet that we attended, but where no one asked us to sign in. so she excused herself to go and check. we waited, but as she was running late , we got bored and decided to spend some time by the pool, then come back to her...

At the new year's banquet, the food was good, not outstanding, but not disappointing either. but service was really slow. anything we asked for took at least 5 minutes to be delivered, like cutlery and water!

the next morning, when my husband asked for an espresso, the waiter got so embarrassed because he didn't know which kinds of coffee were available, excused himself to go and ask...

In conclusion, the location, setting, room, are fantastic, but how this place is rated 5-star really escapes me!!

To have a Lodge/Hotel in the right setting and with the right ambience is only half the battle won, the other half is good maintenance and service and this is certainly the case in our experience where maintenance and service was realy not up to scratch especially from a 5 Star facility.

What we found good about the Lodge was:

Checking in and out was painless, rooms were clean and well furnished, spacious with all the trimmings. Ample parking and a shop for fishing tackle equipment. Spa is beautiful and prices are reasonable with an assortment of treatments

What we found not so charming

Service

Barman was intoxicated and very grumpy and could not supply us with the cocktail we ordered from the drink list as he did not have all the ingredients, ordered Castle Light received a Castle - Twice. Supper was the worst service I have experienced in a very long time, the waiter was incompetent and no management staff checks up on the service, we tried to order wine twice and just gave up as we could not be understood and when she finally understood we were told they were out of stock. Whilst this bad service was going on staff members were playing with each other to such an extent that on two occassions I had to get out of their way to avoid having them run into me. Half way through our meal the waiter stood 5 Meters from us but did not clear the table whilst not being busy at all in fact she had two tables of two people. Al the dirty crockery was on the table when we left. The fridge in the room carries no stock .....not even water, their explanation is you have to organise stock before arrival which can probably work if you are informed. We had to get up at 3h30 to be in time for our hot air balloon flight which meant we had to be in bed early so we were asleep at nine when a staff member started knocking on the door, we ignored the person but he/she refused to give up and kept on knocking for five minutes before going away, still don't know what it was about.

Maintenance

The bathroom basin and bath could not hold water because of faulty plugs. You cannot leave an electronic device to charge as the power is managed with your entrance card which means you can only charge devices if you are in the room. All the lights were not working in the room.

That is what I have, I reckon the maintenace issues would not have bothered so much if the service was up to scratch so excuse me for listing the small stuff as well.

Room Tip: Send your drink and snacks requirements when you make you booking, Interview your waiter with a pen...
