Kloofzicht Lodge & Spa
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 9, 2011

This is my third time at this hotel in the last 8 months. I have always admired the location in a small valley among green and rocky hills. Full of wild animals (not the dangerous ones) gyrafs, kudus, antelops, waterbock, wild pigs etc. A couple of small lakes are completing the picture. It is rather an holiday resort than a business hotel and that may be the reason i liked it. An peaceful haven after the business hours.

Kloofzicht is an ok venue, the rooms are adequate, the spa is immaculate and wonderful. go there! Stay away from the dinner and breakfast area, it will ruin your stay. The food is revolting. Rather eat out or at the spa. some maintenance and spring cleaning is needed in the rooms but were ok. the spa is definitely the place to go, it is like an oasis in the desert.

After reading other reviews about Kloofzicht Lodge, we were reluctant to book it, but we had no choice as a friend was having her wedding there. However, we had a brilliant stay and would recommend it. Firstly the down side - if you are not attending a function there, I can imagine you could get fed up with loud music (which stops at midnight) and wedding guests swamping the place. However the solution is not to book at the weekend - our trip spanned a weekend and the start of a working week, and the place completely changes in character during weekdays. The other down side was the speed that it takes to get things sorted if there is a problem. We had a problem with the electrics in our room and it took 3 separate phone calls to get the problem addressed. However, all the staff are very friendly and willing to help, even if it takes a while for action to happen. Other reviewers also mentioned the constant interruptions in the room. I would agree with this critisism although we found if we put the "do not disturb" notice, this was usually honoured. We also received individual attention from staff in helping us to resolve a problem relating to my husband's suit for the wedding. We cannot critisise the catering at all - both the wedding food and the standard mealtime food was absolutely lovely, with good service as well, although a greater choice outside of normal mealtimes would be nice. The bar does serve good food, but only up until 5pm, which isn't very convenient if all you want for dinner is a light bite (the restaurant meals are a fixed price for 5 courses). The rooms were beautiful with views over one of the lakes and each room had a fire, which proved very useful. I think this place is good, and with a bit of fine tuning it could be exceptional.

Room Tip: Take a few snacks with you.

Kloofzicht despite the deceptive photos on the website is a commerical development capitalising on conferences and large weddings and entirely neglecting the needs of the leisure traveller.

It is constructed from offensive facebrick that does not blend witht he natural surroundings of the beautiful Cradle of Humankind.

Our checkin entailed no briefing that a wedding was in progress and that no free space for other guests existed,or that we needed to drive to our room via boom gate using a keycard. Instead, payment was requested upfront by lethargic staff.

Upon reaching our room, our keycard didn't work. We had to trek back to the main lodge to request another one, before encountering a room that had not been cleaned and had no less than four light bulbs missings from lamps.

We discovered cobwebs in the corners of our room and fishmoths swarming in the bedspreads which hardly inspired a restful night's sleep. The shower whilst huge, had no shelf for toiletries and the towel rack was located ont he opposite side of the bathroom.
Despite the illusion of privacy suggested by the website, family suites are divided by a single wall meaning your 'priavte' balcony is in full view and earshot of your neighbours no more than a metre apart.

At breakfast, the logisitics of coordinating your meal were mindboggling as one had to fetch coffee from one station, milk from another, and toast from the waiter. So if you like your egg on your toast, as do I, you need to involve three waiters and a rather poor chef to succeed.

The staff were unapologetic and are yet to contact me with regards to my complaints.

Overpriced and entirely unworthy of its location and star rating.

Check in time was 2pm, we arrived at about 4pm and after checking in at recepion was told where to find our room as we had to drive there and use the 'card key' to go through a security gate. The 'key' also operated the lights, so if one wanted to stay and read in the room and the other wanted to go to the bar, tough as there was only one card! The room was not made up! I phoned reception and she sounded surprised and said she would send someone along. Someone from from housekeeping came and explained that there was no clean linen as the previous day had been a holiday...... NO offer of refreshments etc in the main lounge, so we drove back to the main lounge and had a cold drink in the bar till the smoking drove us outside where they were smoking too. Back to the room at 6pm, Room was made up by 6.30. This is not accepable from a 5Star and we had no apology from either the Manager or Duty Manager. The dinner that evening was reasonable for a 3STAR, service was shocking eventhough there were only a few tables in use. Clearly no training has been given and the Tourist Board really has to take a look at this place.

We stayed at Kloofzicht for one night as we had a hot air balloon flight early the next morning. The room was comfortable, and the bathroom was big and lovely.

The only complaint I have was that the food was not up to scratch. My chicken was not cooked properly. I sent it back and the second time it was still not cooked properly.

We were still charged the full price for the dinner.

Unfortunately, there was a cycle race that same weekend, so the resort was very noisy and busy.

Not a bad stay, though, and given that they were having a special the rates were good.

Very close to all the Cradle of Humankind sights.
