We are regular visitor of the reserve, coming usually for day trips with our friends or visitors. The location is just perfect, less than 30 minutes drive, and while it is not a large park, it is a very good opportunity to be out from the crowd and the city. This time we decided to have a nice open door braai with our friends and their children, so we could combine a short game drive, visit the newest cubs, see the reptiles and also use the picnic site for the braai and the playground for the children. Weather was just fantastic, we had a perfect day.

What a gem hidden away so close to the city. Perfect place to the family for a day trip. Lots of animals to see. The highlight is the feeding of the lions, cheetahs and wild dogs. Make sure you visit the animal creche and pay a bit extra to spend 5 minutes with the lion cubs. Picnic spots are so comfortable and are equipped with tiled work spaces, tables, benches, fireplaces and taps. Make sure to go early as there is so much too see.

We recently took a German (Bavarian) business associate with the family to view some African game. This was our first visit to the Lion and Rhino Reserve, but the website provided ample info and it seemed it would fit the bill. The park is literally on the front porch of the North-Western Johannesburg suburbs and Lanseria Airport, close to The Cradle of Humankind. From arrival we were impressed by the service, clear directions to attractions and friendly staff. On our way to the camp for carnivores we saw abundant plains game right next to the roads. About ten species were noted in les than 30 minutes, including buffalo. We arrived in time to see the wild dogs , cheetahs and lions being fed. Then the misfortune struck! My Bayerische Motoren Werken, with the genuine article in the form of our Bavarian friend inside, started overheating! In the cheetah camp, literally 30 yards from the feeding cheetahs, a water pipe and the reservoir finally burst and we were stuck! Then the wonderful staff of the park, under the command of Warren Rossouw , took over. They towed us to safety, transported me to the Lanseria airport to collect a rental vehicle, assisted the tow-truck into the reserve and out, and were generally just amazing. And the best of all; on our way out we came across two rhinos with their calves, right next to our vehicle. THANK YOU Lion and Rhino Reserve for a disaster turned absolutely memorable. We will be back shortly.

I've been to the Lion and Rhino park a few times and it is definitely one of my favourite places to visit. The animals look well cared for (as opposed to the Lion Park where animals have tiny enclosures and appear depressed). All animals here move about and have plenty of space to roam. On this visit, a female lion was darted to be moved and we were lucky enough to be invited by veterinary staff to view this majestic animal up close as we had been watching the darting. For best viewing go late on in the day.

I stayed in the "Ostrich" self catering log cabin. It is well appointed with 2 bedrooms each with ensuite, kitchen and large deck with braai and jacuzzi that over looks the predator camp. You can hear the wild dogs yapping and lions roar at night and in the morning.

The animal crèche offers a great opportunity to interact with cheetah and lion cubs and to see the smaller the predators leopards and hyena.

I would recommend the rhino and lion park and definitely stay in the lug cabins as you can start your game drive early in the moving when all the animals are active.
