“Fantastic overall experience”

This boutique hotel is a lovely luxury getaway. Very clean with helpful staff. No only are the rooms big with a pleasant modern african edge, but you get to shower in glass roofed shower to view the stars at night.

I would highly recommend this hotel as a stop over or for a short getaway. Set in the cradle of human kind it is in close proximity to a number of must see attractions namely the Rhino and Lion Park (make sure you visit the caves their) and Maropeng (history of evelution). You can get one pass for all three.

You MUST dine at the ROOTS restaurant. If anything this dining experience is worth the stay if you really want to treat yourself. Have a 6 course gourmet plated dinner with a wine that has been selected to bring out the flavours of each course. I would imagine that the lunch menu is just as good. Four course breakfast was superb!

We stayed at the beautiful Forum Homini hotel for the second time. While the rooms were just as gorgeous as we remembered them and the food was fantastic, the waiter service in the restaurant was really appalling for a hotel of this calibre. The waiters grunted a response, never explained the dish as they set it/threw it down in front of you. Never once checked if all was ok. Forgot our drinks order. When no actual food ordering is done as the menu is set all the waiters really need to do is take drinks orders and ferry food. They were so unfriendly and you just got the impression that they really didn't care at all. So sad when the ambience and food and rooms are so lovely. We asked for some snacks (biltong or the like) while we had our Pre dinner drinks to be told an outright no, you must wait until dinner. Breakfast was no better. Food and rooms great but service has much to be desired. Would really consider other choices in the future.

My husband and I spent our wedding night at Forum Homini four years ago. We were blown away by the room (marketed as a 'luxury cave'), gobsmacked by the location and setting (deep within the Cradle of Humankind) and absolutely wowed by the degustation menu available at Roots, the hotel's signature restaurant and one of Joburg's top ten, according to EatOut.

So, this weekend, to celebrate four years of marriage, we went back. And we had a superlative time. Beautiful room, glorious environment, very good food. Excellent service. But, we couldn't help noticing that the general attention to detail has dropped off quite a bit since 2007.

I don't want to nitpick. And we really did enjoy ourselves. But... This is a review site... So, let me review.

1. I called Reception to ask for a DVD on their DVD list. The gal at the front said she didn't know if they had it, but if they did, she'd send it through. Nothing. No DVD. No reply.

2. There was a little plate of complimentary fruit left in our room. Very nice. But the apple was very bruised. Again, a small thing. But, for that calibre of hotel, a bit slack.

3. The lovely patio loungers were sopping wet. Too wet to sit on, even with a towel on them.

4. Our dinner was beautifully presented, creatively conceived and enthusiastically served. But it wasn't award-winning. Over the last four years we've eaten in some great restaurants and at some wonderful hotels. And we've learned that there are restaurants and hotels that rival and supersede Roots. But four years ago, there weren't. It was flawless.

5. The restaurant itself shows small signs of complacency. The windows into the kitchen are covered in greasy fingerprints and the large door is left to bang unpleasantly in the wind.

So, that's it. It was absolutely lovely to get away together, and to re-live some of our wedding night excitement, and we both feel rested, rejuvenated and relaxed... But we were a little disappointed by the small things. And you don't really want that at a 5-star hotel...

We stayed her as a family. The location is lovely and the rooms are well designed. I've yet to come to terms with a sitting area which has a bath in it but that is probaby my age!
There are a few matters though which maybe a hotel of this kind should deal with. Our used hand towel was taken away on one morning but not automatically repalced. The ethernet socket is underneath the desk and is not easy to get to. More impportantly perhaps, the rooms are beginning to show some wear and tear, even though the hotel is fairly new. The patio door of my daughters' room was really hard to open and didn't seem to lock properly. Our outer door was cracked really badly so you could look in from the outside. None of this spoiled our stay of course, but it gave a bad impression in a fairly expensive location.

This hotel and restaurant went out of their way to ensure that me proposing to my girlfriend was the most romantic evening in the world. They set up a separate room, with our own table. They ensured that we were well served, and the food was great. Everyone congratulated us afterwards. They ensured that the room was romantic with flowers.

I would recommend this to any guy wanting to propose.

My husband and I recently stayed at Forum Homini, the hotel on the same property as Roots restaurant. Forum Homini is a luxury hotel near the Cradle of Humankind sites, and a lovely oasis. We stayed in the honeymoon suite (only room available), and it was not an inexpensive stay, but price included a six-course (really nine-course) dinner and five-course breakfast, thus overall it was a good deal.

Our suite was secluded, private, impeccably clean and very comfortable. The decor is a bit psychadelic (lots of purple, magenta, shag carpet, mod furniture, etc.), but no harm done there. Indoor/outdoor shower, towel warmer, robes, big bed, all the good stuff. Overall service is very attentive - they provided guidance on tourist sites and were quick to oblige calling in advance for details about activities - but we found it odd that the staff who come in to turn down the bed didn't bother to clean up a cold, half drunk coffee we had left from earlier in the day, nor did they take away a melted gigantic ice bucket that used to hold champagne. These were certainly not disruptive oversights, and they didn't tarnish our stay - it was just a bit odd considering the class of the hotel.

In sum we had a very relaxing and indulgent time at Forum Homini and would recommend it to others.
