I am writing this review with very mixed thoughts about it, but overall found that the good definitely outweighed the bad, and if it were not for these bad points, for us anyway, DEFINITELY would rate this place higher than 3 stars as it's absolutely gorgeous.

PROS: As we didn't have use of a car, they offer a free shuttle service to the airport which runs approx. every 20 minutes and was absolutely great. Amazingly, with just a short walk (within the complex), and also past a section where there is a fascinating display about apartheid, there is a HUGE area which is comprised of a food court, some shops, more restaurants of all ethnic types, a casino, and a 4 or 5 screen movie theatre. Our room itself had some cool lighting in it (although not bright enough for reading)as well as an extremely comfortable bed.

CONS: We thought it very odd that they offered shampoo and one bar of soap as their amenitites and that was about it. No hair conditioner? I always have my own, but due to circumstances beyond my control didn't have any and needed some and after asking at reception was told they don't carry any???? (Their sister hotel which is right across the street doesn't either. Be careful that you've got the right place you want when you check in as well, as the names are very similar and you could easily end up with the wrong place.)
What we found amazing, and have never seen it in a hotel before, was that there were no brochures whatsoever anywhere in our room that mentioned what services were available in the hotel. If we hadn't asked at reception where we could get something to eat, we would never have known about the wonderful meal and entertainment complex there.

Make sure you ask if you want a non-smoking room, as they do have an area that has smoking rooms.
The thing that really bothered us the most, was the fact that they charged us for collect calls.??? (We didn't bring our cell phone and in retrospect should have got a temporary one with a SIM card I guess, but weren't planning on using it) As it was related to a medical emergency, we had to phone. Imagine our surprise when we got a bill for the 2 collect calls we had made. Reception didn't understand the concept of what a collect call is where the person receiving the call pays for it,not you, and after even talking to the manager they wouldn't budge on it. THEY ALL NEED TO KNOW WHAT A COLLECT CALL IS!!!! After wasting an incredulous amount of time at reception and with having to leave to go to the airport, we thought it was extremely bad customer service, and the 2 calls were very expensive as had to call to Vancouver, Canada. One tip to everyone. DO NOTeven make a local call from the hotel either. The rate they charge is unbelievable price gouging out of this world - we couldn't believe it!

In retrospect, we really loved this place. It's a very nice hotel (also looks way more classy than a 3 star) and the entertainment complex was a fabulous bonus. Hopefully they will get their outrageous phone prices rectified, and supply the standard amenities in your room.

Our hallway smelled of sewage. The room looked like a hospital room. There was only a curtain to cover the bathroom area. We were on our anniversary trip and had 2 beds pushed together in a tiny room. Our hotel key didn't work after going back to the desk 3 times they finally sent someone up to unlock it with a key and then weren't able to fix it while we were there. Bad experience!

This place is huge... so huge the porter was unable to find the room allocated to our friends and neither could we when their room phone did not work. Our room was adjacent to the car park - luckily while there it was not very busy and it was for one night only. The hotel is 10-20 minutes from the airport, traffic dependent. When you catch the shuttle from the hotel to the airport, allow for delays. Two women on our bus didn't allow enough time for their international flight and with an accident on the freeway delaying the trip further, it left them highly stressed.
Our room was colourful, the various coloured lights giving the room a very modern feel, but for us with poor low light vision, not good for reading.
The bed was the most comfortable and luxurious we've slept in for quite a while. The bed linen was comfy and doona good to snuggle into on our cool rainy night's stay.
The bathroom area with shower over bath, the toilet in this room also, was a little small, the basin area larger, with plenty of mirrors throughout. We did have to request toiletries as there was none supplied in the room on arrival.
The breakfast buffet was fair. Service was lacking, as was friendly service when it did arrive.
For dinner, you certainly have choice in the shopping / food mall between the hotel and casino. Restaurants or fast food and this can be charged back ro your room. Check out the restaurant strip - it is twilight 24/7 - bizarre!
In the adjoining corridor of the hotel there was an interesting display of historical events on Mandela's release and end of apartheid.

This was my second stay at metcourt suites on a short stopover in jo'burg. The staff at the reception were good last time but on this occasional they were fantastic (i wish i had there names). My Mum and i arrived early 6:30am and knew we couldn't check-in that early without paying extra as per normal. I asked the lady at the desk if it was possible to get a slightly earlier than normal check-in (we were really tired). She said she would see what we could do. We went to have a coffee in the hotel (my first proper coffee since leaving australia..malaysia terrible). We decided to do a morning tour while waiting for our room which reception helped us with. Even before we left for tour they had organised a room for us!

The room looked liked it had a revamp since i last stayed in 2009. It was very moden and beds so comfortable.

The buffet breakfast ( although small) was again excellent and tasted fresh. The great thing about this airport hotel is that there is direct connection to many eating options outside the casino and well the casino is fun to have a drink and check out the various games going on.

There is a shuttle that runs from airport to hotel every 20 minutes.

My only issue with the hotel and hence why i gave a lower score for cleaniness is that both times i stayed here i had a 'non-smoking' room. yet both times it smelt like someone had been smoking in there. They do have a warning about smoking in these rooms being a not acceptable but i noticed they had a humidifier going in the hallways the entire time. This is something they need to sort out.

This review is for the METCOURT SUITES Hotel, totally separate to the Metcourt Hotel.
The Suites Hotel is the sister hotel, not sure if they are joined together.

We have stayed at Emperors Palace before and are great fans.
The free transfer is very handy and available every 30 mins.
You can stand if want to as we did when the bus was full.
No problem there as the ride is less than 10 minutes.

After a 6-hour flight delay we checked in much later than we had planned.
It may explain why we were allocated a suite with a window that is separated with a gap but looks across to a corridor in another building.
No natural daylight and the room felt like it was a dark hole.
We had no idea what time it was in the morning without any light filtering into the suite.
Reviews from Trip Advisor alerted us to this and we asked for an outside window room in our reservation.
For whatever reason our request was ignored.
The suites had minimal lighting (mood lighting only) and exacerbated the lack of light.

The room was very long with two large queen beds and it my have been a family room.
It was done in the style of the 70's with lime green lounge chairs, a clear plastic desk chair, light furniture accented with white floor tiles.
Separate anteroom near the door with a large wardrobe, safe and a long double vanity unit. One small soap and one shampoo are the only amenities provided but had tea and coffee.
The bathroom had shower over bath (need to be a high jumper to get into it!) with a glass sliding panel and just enough space for the toilet.

The beds were very comfy with fresh, clean linens so we thought that we would get a great night's sleep...WRONG!!

Noise ALL night from workers banging away at something and echoing straight into our room (dismantling event seating we think).
Called reception at 430 am for it to be stopped and eventually it did.

To compound the noise, the room had been recently painted and a scented humidifier was running to disguise the smell.
Didn't help so the air con was running like a truck all night as well.
Guess we just were not meant to sleep too much that night.

Finally woke up exhausted to complete darkness and just made it to breakfast.
That was worth getting up for and the food choice, quality and service was very good.

The hotel should warn guests they have rooms devoid of natural light.
Don’t know if the other Metcourt Hotel has the same layout.
We tried in the reservation process for a normal room but were ignored.
Do we take the chance of staying here again knowing it is a big possibility?
The noise is another issue and it can happen anywhere.

It's a pity as the suites are quite nice if you like the retro look.
We would only stay again if we got a suite with natural daylight.

Room Tip: Get an outside window room if you need daylight.

When we (my husband and I) go to Joburg we always stay at Metcourt Suites at the Emperors Palace complex because it is very convenient for travellers who wants to stay overnight in the city. The free shuttle is very efficent and easy to get from/ to the airport. The casino (we don´t play) and the restaurants are good to spend some hours and even watch a show if we are not very tired.
More recentely they opened a hotel with more rooms with the same name but without the "Suites" in their name. The internet site is confusing and we ended going to the "Peermont Metcourt" as the shuttle driver identifies it instead of the "Metcourt Suites" (they are in front of each other) and we were very disappointed. The rooms are very small and we don´t have privacy in the bathroom - differentely from the "Suites" that are spacious and far better. Don´t bother to pay a fews bucks more to stay in the right place: the Metcourt Suites.
