Peermont D'oreale Grande at Emperors Palace
Ranked #8 of 26 Hotels in Kempton Park
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed September 9, 2013

The whole Emperor's palace (4 different hotels plus casino) gives the impression that no money has been spared on making it tacky, from the stylised paintings, to the roman chariot statue in the huge ornamental pool. The rooms are typical, comfortable hotel rooms as seen the world over. The bed is comfortable, bathroom is fine, the TV works etc, but there is nothing special. The casino is probably the tackiest I've seen anywhere, comprising almost exclusively slot machines in sterile rooms of lights. The staff were attentive but not overly interested. We didn't eat in the hotel restaurant because it was busy with a large group and were advised that there might be a wait for food, so we wandered through the casino to the food market area. This is set up like a series of buildings fronting a walking street. They have painted the ceiling with a pattern of blue sky and clouds so that the initial impression is that you are outdoors on a sunny day. Like most of the decor though, even a slightly closer inspection reinforces the feeling of tacky. Breakfast in the main restaurant next morning was good, with a fine view over a garden with pool/fountain and nobody out there. It is suitable for a safe bed in Jo'burg overnight but I wouldn't stay too long.

Room Tip: We were next to the elevators but were not disturbed by noise, so insulation is good.

Stayed in the hotel for 5 nights and got a room on the 5th floor with entrance to the club lounge with a package : dinner included. The room was pretty good, excellent kingsize bed. The amenities in the bathroom are great, All is very clean. Breakfast can be taken at the club lounge which is very convenient and the variety in the food is good, lots of juices, fresh fruit, cheese, fish, meat, warm and cold dishes. The coffee was top and the service was excellent; the staff was vrey dedicated. The dinner at Aurelias was fantastic with reasonable service; the waiters did their job on "routine".
The staff at the reception could be better, they were attentive but not very "personal", working on their routine. The check in and out could be done at the club lounge which was a great advantage. Overall a good experience.

We had a date night at the D'oreale , just 20 minutes from home but feels like miles away ...It is excellent value for money , lovely opulent hotel with the nice touches like fluffy bath robes and rose petals on the bed. The décor is very "gold and glitzy Vegas" and I loved it , my only gripe was the room was very small. The check in was swift and the front office manager is in evidence as you arrive. We were happy with our room, booked directly on the Peermont website. The breakfast at Aurelias is fantastic , very much like the Palace at Lost City , just not as big , there is not a food group not represented, tuck in and spoil yourself. Loved the lobby and general areas , feels very luxurious. Great deals online and it helps to have a winners circle card , even if you are not a gambler per se. The feedback form was promptly emailed after check out, and the manager replied and thanked us for our remarks , nice touch. Go on and spoil yourself for a night out in your own city Jozi residents .. that pool looks amazing will be the place to lounge when the weather warms up ..

I was surprised to note that once victims of racial discrimination would discriminate against Asians in the provision of service. I joined a group tour to Kenya with my friends this August and on our way back to Hong Kong, our group stayed one night (10 August) in this hotel. The next morning, we had breakfast at the hotel's Aurella's Restaurant which had a good garden view. Two of my friends arrived the restaurant early and noted that the tables near the windows were all vacant. They requested a window table but were told by a waitress that those tables would only be given to patrons of 3 to 4 persons. After taking an inside table, my friends saw a white couple arrived and were given a window table. Observing that the white couple had no other friends with them, my friends approached the waitress for an explanation. The waitress then reluctantly "allowed" my two friends to take a window table. I and my other friends later arrived the restaurant. We all observed that the waitress there were very attentive to the needs of the "white" patrons but took a couldn't care less attitude towards Asians. On one occasion, we raised our hands for a long time before a waitress was willing to stop chatting with her colleagues and approached us. The hotel was alright in general but we were not satisfied with the service in the breakfast venue.

My review is written on the basis of a one night stopover between Sydney and Kigali so it can only give you a broad opinion.

There was virtually nothing that you could fault the hotel on, service might be considered a little slow, but then as was streesed to us the appropriate acronym is TIA (this is Africa). Breakfast was top-notch and the ease of getting to and from the airport with the free shuttle service was of great assistance.

As other reviewers have probably mentioned this hotel is one of a number that the Group has on this campus. The core building appears to be the casino which one has to pass through to get to, for example, the Food Court. All one has to remember is that one is not allowed to bring a gun into the casino, which was most comforting to those of us who live in societies where the carriage of arms is not the norm.

The Food Court with its faux Italian look and replete with a copy of the Statue of David lends one way or another to the ambience.

We stayed at this hotel on 2 occasions on a recent holiday to Africa. Travelling from Australia we had to overnight in Johannesburg a couple of times as we travelled to and between Botswana, Tanzania and Kenya. The Peermont D'Oreale is really 3 hotels in one with the Grande Hotel being the 5 star hotel in the group (Metcourt Suites and Mondior are 3 and 4 star). There is a free shuttle bus from the Johannesburg International Airport to this hotel which takes about 15minutes so in our mind this really isn't an airport hotel.
The décor of the Grande hotel is sumptuous with marble, glitz and glamour on show. Joburg's answer to Las Vegas we surmised. Our room was fine without being memorable though the bathroom amenities were very good.
Via internal walking arcades from the hotel you can enter the Casino (what a surprise) and also an area with about 10 international restaurants that circle a copy of the statue of David (yes it is that sort of place). We enjoyed the Tribes restaurant best which specialized in native African food.
If you are just passing through Joburg on the way to other parts of Africa - for safaris as we did - I would stay at an airport hotel in the airport rather than taking the trip out to this hotel.

Room Tip: if you are going to stay here stay at The Grande

We had an overnight stop here on our way from Botswana to Madagascar and our agent chose it because it was close to the airport and was a touch of luxury after a fortnight in a tent.
It is in a complex with several hotels, casinos and fountains- very Vegas- so if you like "flashy" then this would be ideal.
We arrived rather late, after a delayed flight and were tired, dishevelled and hungry. When we approached the reception desk, the receptionist made no attempt to smile, make conversation or be welcoming in any way. I apologised for our late arrival (she didn't even acknowledge that I'd spoken) and I asked whether it would be possibbel to book a reservation in their restaurant as we were rather hungry. She pointed in the direction of the restaurant and told me that I would have to go and ask- I do think maybe it would have been nice of her to ring through and check for us but maybe I'm just expecting too much.
We therefore went to the restaurant to ask if there was a free table and the lady running the reservations said yes, she could squeeze us in but we'd better be quick (we'd explained we wanted to get washed and changed after our long day) as otherwise she'd give the table to someone else.
We changed clothes and rushed back down to be shown to our table. The lady who'd saved the table for us pointed over to the serving area, said "it's a buffet tonight" then left us.
The food was pleasant enough but not brilliant and being a buffet, rather limited as we are vegetarian. That said, the breakfast the following morning was really nice.
The porter who carried our bags to the room and showed us round, was really nice, as was the chap guarding the lifts but overall, I am a bit shocked that a swish hotel like this doesn't seem to employ staff in front of house roles who can't even crack a smile at guests. Style over substance I feel- fine for a one night stop-over but I wouldn't stay any longer than that.
