“Good hotel for layover”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2013

We stayed in this hotel before flying to Kruger Park the next day. The hotel is nice and comfortable, like the rooms.
It could have received a 4 or even 5 star rating from us if it would have not been an integrated part of what we almost experienced as an amusement park. Huge casino, food courtyard with multiple fast food restaurants etc. If you travel with kids and you like this "American style" this could be your hotel to stay.
Breakfast was good (buffet-style) with a lot of choice.
We did not use the pool but it looked nice. The number of beds was limited though and during breakfast we already saw people reserving beds.
Would we come back? Not for a long stay, maybe again for a layover

During our recent Holiday Vacation, we bounced around from Dubai to Cape Town to Johannesburg to Victoria Falls back to Johannesburg and finally to the Island of Mauritius before returning home via Dubai back to Dallas. We utilized the d'Oreale as our layover hotel.

The hotel itself is located approximately 10 minutes from the Terminals at O R Tambo Johannesburg International Airport (JNB). A roomy shuttle with great drivers is available with the exception of 11PM to 5AM or so. If you need an airport pickup between 11P and 5A, the Hotel will arrange a cab service for you. A private shuttle is also available at what I considered a reasonable price - we needed one as there were 5 of us with +20 pieces of luggage and equipment.

The d'Oreale Grande is at the top end of the four hotels included in the Emperors Palace gated complex. There is also a casino along with a number of restaurants and shops within Emperors Palace. The d'Oreale and Emperors Entertainment Complex is connected via a corridor or you can take a very short and safe walk outside to reach the Complex. The Entertainment Complex is very much like those you find in Las Vegas albeit smaller in size and scope. In-fact, once inside the complex, you’ll most likely think you are in Vegas. I personally find Emperors to be more enjoyable because it is smaller and on a more "doable" scale.

Upon arrival, the d'Oreale Bellmen immediately welcomed us and began offloading our bags while we began the check-in process. The check-in process for me was smooth but for one of party it was a bit of a nightmare (a room with two beds was required and had been confirmed via email prior to arrival, but the front desk didn't seem to understand that, keycards that didn't work, one of the rooms hadn't been cleaned, et. al.).

In total, we had three rooms one of which we were "holding" for three days as a place to store our gear while we were on an overnight to Victoria Falls. We did a checkout/check-in for the other two rooms. Keeping the one room was less expensive, less hassle and certainly more safe than any luggage storage facilities we were able to find around the JNB airport.

The rooms - not large, not small but comfortable with linens you'd expect from a 4-5 Star property.

Beware of the bathrooms - getting into the combination tub/shower (at least in my room) was a schlep as the edge of the tub was between 18" and 24" from the floor. There was a step stool in the bathroom one could use. Quite frankly, the tub/shower configuration is a place waiting for a fall to occur. I'm not sure if the hotel has Shower Only (no tub) rooms or not, but I'll request that next time.

d'Oreale restaurants and rooms service - the breakfast buffet was what one would normally expect from a property of this size. Food and selection were above average; Service was average. Room Service... oh my we utilized room service on our last night at the hotel. Big mistake - awful, couldn't eat it - worst I've ever experienced - how difficult is it to mess up on a hamburger?

Overall, I'd recommend and stay at this hotel again - with the exception of room service issue - the hotel has its act very much together. I can't say enough good things about the Bellmen - some of best - they know what to do and how to take care of guests without going over the top. Their experience shows!

Room Tip: If you have mobility issues or a bad knee or back or just short legs, getting into the combination t...

The room was very comfortable with a lovely bath room. The spa bath was a special treat and we were treated with a ice cold bottle of shampers at arrival. It was noisy outside because their was Chrimas lights and loud music in the garden. The Dinner the eavening was dissapointing for a 5 Star Hotel .IThe variety of meat and veggies was very ordinary. No carvery and no cheese board with the cofee. The breakfast was better ,but their was along qeue to get some fried eggs or a omlette

Spent the first and last night of our holiday in this hotel.

We had requested for an early check-in (8 a.m.) and the hotel accommodated our request at no extra cost. The room & bathroom were clean and breakfast was what you can expect from a hotel of this size - large buffet with above average taste.

The hotel is 5 minutes from the Airport and runs shuttles until 11 pm. On our way back our flight from Cape Town was delayed and the hotel failed to send us a shuttle to pick us up. The receptionist was unapologetic.

Net net a clean room, bathroom, comfortable bed & easy access to the airport make it a good transit hotel.

Room Tip: Get a pool facing room on a high floor.

This was the first hotel we stayed at in Africa after 33 hours of travelling.Everything about the hotel reminded me of Las Vegas over the top.The D'Oreale Grande is one of 4 hotels in the Emperors Palace gated complex which also includes a large casino. There is a free shuttle van to the hotel from the airport, look for the van with Emperors Palace on it only a 5min drive. We arrived early in the morning and were thrilled when they were able to check us in and get to our room.We booked a deluxe room which overlooked the pool and gardens which was very spacious and comfortable. The decor of the room and the lobby of the hotel reminded me of Las Vegas,a bit over the top.The hotel does have a spa,gym and large pool which looked a bit dirty, but maybe October is not pool season. The breakfast buffet was very nice with plenty of hot and cold options,no complaints from us.We ate no other meals in the hotel during our short one night stay. There are plenty of dining options if you take the walkway into the casino. The casino was nice since South Africa has set aside smoking rooms for the smokers and the majority of the casino is set aside for non smoking unlike the USA where the smokers still rule most of the casinos. We were pleased with our stay at the D'Oreale Grande, our room was nice and the service was good.I think for one or two nights or just a stopover this hotel is fine, any longer and I think the location is not that convenient for exploring the city.On our return to to Johannesburg we stayed in Sandton which was a great location for everything. If you like Las Vegas you will love the D'Oreale Grande Hotel and the Emperors Palace.

Spent 2 nights here on a break from a business trip to Johannesburg. Got an all inclusive deal with wi-fi, dinner, bed and breakfast for $170/night direct from the peermont website.

Check-in was very smooth, good car parking and well appointed lobby. Room was very comfortable and met 5 star standards. High quality toiletries in bathroom, plenty of closet space, good range of television stations and nice view over casino gardens and hotel pool.

Hotel restaurant was very good, although couldn't dine outdoors on the pation at night due to bugs. Good menu range and very nice food. Good selection of wines.

Hotel has an internal corridor to the casino, which has a great range of bars and restaurants. News Cafe and Hooters were good bards for a beer and it was hard to choose from the range of quality cuisines.

Arrived at hotel at 3.30pm checked in went to our room, which was not ready. We waited in the passage whilst they cleaned and restocked. Our dinner reservation was not booked, although this was confirmed via email a few days prior to us arriving. Service at Greek restaurant was shocking and filthy. Sunday morning went down for breakfast and we were told that there is a 30 minute wait. Totally unacceptable if you are staying at the hotel. Front desk staff told us that they are always busy on Sundays and confirmed this was a regular problem, but nothing has been done to change this. Very disappointed considering we paid a lot of money to stay in a so called 5 star hotel
