Most airport hotels are pretty soulless places but The Aviator does at least try with its aviator theme. The room was a decent size and clean. I thought the triple adapter with different country sockets was a nice touch. The staff were friendly and very helpful and the airport shuttle (included in the price) was efficient and on time. The restaurant was fine and the hot buffet breakfast (also included) was plentiful and good. Its not somewhere you would necessarily want to spend a vacation, but as a stopover point it ticks all the boxes. Would definitely use again.

Booked via internet, arrived at Joburg airport, the shuttle was waiting as requested. Airport porters were a hassle and tried to demand exorbitant tips.
Hotel is nice, friendly, helpful reception staff. My room was cold and no heating. There are no phones working so impossible to call reception. I changed rooms but the 2nd one was same layout, but shower flooded the bathroom floor. Limited channels on TV, only 1 english news channel. Would try a different hotel next time. Restaurant food, breakfast were very good.

Room Tip: Don't get an end room, traffic noise.

Due to an unforeseen change of travel plans, I had to spend two nights here. Where to start...

Rooms: Very basic considering what you pay for. Bathroom floods, like most other reviews have stated. Perhaps they could of used regular lighting instead of fancy lighting everywhere and used the remainding money to invest in the other half of the glass shower door that is much needed....

Security: I consider this area to be a bit dodgy, so to see the gate left open and unattended for a lengthy period of time was unsettling. This hotel, among all others in the surrounding area, have a 6ft high gate and 3ft high electic fence on top of that surrounding their premises for a reason... Also, the guards liked to talk extremely loudly after 10pm just outside the windows which made getting to sleep even more difficult on top of the constant air traffic. (Should've bought ear plugs I know...)

Food: Breakfast is great-buffet style with plenty of choices for all dietary requirements. However, I ordered dinner there one night and the steak I got came served with steamed squash, zucchini and capsicum with the option of BBQ or tomato sauce plus mcdonalds looking fries. No option to have mushroom or pepper sauce with it. For the price I paid this was a bit disappointing...

Transfer: The driver I had was great. Friendly and polite which was a bonus. The bus stop area at the airport where they ask to meet you is a bit of a walk from the airport and hard to find at first, but I managed. I also opted to get this free transfer back to the airport so I could do some shopping and order a cheaper (and more delicious) meal. You can also get the 'emperors palace' free transfer from the airport to their premises and back to the airport before getting the Aviator free shuttle back to the hotel from the airport if you're looking for a night out in a Vegas like setting...

Staff: Most staff were helpful and I have nothing bad to say in this section.

Wifi: Oh man!! Having two days here, wifi was essential. You have to constantly get papers with a username and password from reception to access wifi. I had to constantly keep re-entering these details as soon as I put my phone down for 5 mins as the wifi locked me out. It was frustrating constantly typing in these details but I guess I'd rather that than no wifi at all!!

Facilities: Awesome pool area, shame it's too cold for a swim!

All in all The Aviator hotel is overpriced, but good for an overnight stay but I've stayed at the Aero Guest lodge around the corner which is cheaper with friendlier staff, great food, better wifi and offers all the same services. I couldn't stay with them this time only because they didn't have any vacancies...

I spent about 24 hours between flights at this hotel. All in all, an excellent value and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

Location:

Very near the airport. The shuttle took a while to show up, but it was only a 5 minute ride. This property isn't in a great area. Don't leave the hotel on foot. I would suggest eating at the hotel unless you arrange a know ride somewhere (see warning below about that).

Public Areas:

The lobby, pool, and restaurant/bar area have a "I want to hang out here" feeling. It's actually where I spent a great deal of time (and where the wi-fi) is best. It's done with a understated and subtle, yet very tasteful "aviation" theme. It was a very comfortable environment.

Restaurant/Bar:

Excellent value, excellent food, decent service. I really enjoyed eating here. The included breakfast was honestly one of the best hotel breakfasts I had anywhere. It was REALLY good.

Rooms:

OK. Small and basic. There are cutsey-boutique elements I liked (e.g. lighting) but other elements (e.g. bathroom) that felt more economy motel. It was comfortable enough for a short stay. Keep your expectations low and you'll be fine.

One word of warning: Be cautious if you ask the hotel staff about taxis or tours. I felt like they were steering us awry. They weren't looking to send us to be best company or best price, but the one where they had friends or were getting a kickback. Do you research. Maybe set up things in advance. Don't rely on the hotel to have your best interest in mind

In fact, aside from this issue I MIGHT have given this hotel 4 stars.

This hotel is the noisiest from them all and offers average accommodation for the business traveler. Also the newest kid on the block, but use it only if the other ones are full. The meals are ok and you have free transfers. It is situated in the departure flight path so you have a noisy night until 23h00.

Rooms were clean but had problems with water flow during our stay. Breakfast was assorted and excellent. Internet advertised but very weak signals in most of the rooms. The view from my room overlooking the street to the airport was not great but what really caught my eyes was the huge billboard which seemed to dwarf the hotel from afar.

Room Tip: Very close to the Airport with a shuttle which leaves every thirty minutes for the Airport Remind t...
